"POR" Question???

in U.S. Coin Forum
"POR" will be seen once in a while for a coin listed for sale. Not talking about bullion related items.
I assume it means Price On Request. What are some of your thoughts when you see this?
Please... Save The Stories, Just Answer My Questions, And Tell Me How Much!!!!!

    I did buy one "POR" coin once. It was a special coin with an unusual pedigree that the sellers wanted to make sure they sold to someone who would appreciate it. The coin was expensive, but not unreasonably so and not out of my comfort zone.

    When I see POR, I think 6 figures and up.

    To me, POR signifies too high of an asking price (THOAAP) and/or different price quotes for different inquirers (DPQFDI).image

    When I see POR I see a seller who is trying to do the buyer a favor on an extremely expensive coin. The buyer may not want the world to know what the asking price of the coin was.

    What I see is a selling price that the dealer doesn't want everyone to see and say ... WHATimage
    Some coins are just plain "Interesting"

    Brandon, I might agree with that theory if sellers were consistent in using POR for coins at/above a particular price cut off. I don't typically see that being practiced, however.

    To me, POR is just like an eBay auction with no picture. There's usually a reason, and it's that the asking price is too high for the coin. Common knowledge among professional negotiators is that he who makes the first offer usually loses the negotiation, so by not showing a price in my mind the dealer is just trying for a better negotiating hand. So, since I don't like to play games, I just pass.

    I get a laugh out of Contoursi and how he frequently puts POR in his CW ads. Hell he lists stuff for 6 figures and then puts POR on other stuff....why bother.

    I called a "POR" one time and guess what? YUP, the story started off so heavy I couldn't say a word. I hung up in the middle of the "story."

    I usually think I'll be POoR if I buy the coin. To me it signifies that the price is so high, the seler doesn't want to write it down.

    In my opinion, POR generally is used by dealers who don't have either the fortitude to allow the public to know what it is they are asking or by those who don't want to share specialized information with the greater public. Either way, even though I can typically afford a POR coin, I will go out of my way to avoid it and the dealer.

    POR to me means the dealer does not want my business.
    I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

    Another use of POR is for dealers that want to show an interested customer a coin on their web site without letting the pricing information out. It may mean the deal is done or nearly so and the customer and dealer then do not have to divulge the selling price to anyone else, yet an image can be posted for the buyer to look at.

    I personally have no problem with the use of POR, but if overused it tends to be a turn off. If I want a coin, I do not hesitate to call the dealer for a description and pricing information. I don't think that I've ever been NOT told the asking price. Some have been so high I was glad I was sitting down!

    I don't know what to make of it quite honestly. There's a dealer who has over 90% of his coins (on the internet) listed that way. I used to look at his site and consider a coin or two but now, since he's done this, I don't bother looking any longer. What am I supposed to do, call him up, get a price and then say OH?!

    I have never asked for a price when something is listed with a POR

    Can't see me starting now either.
    Some coins are just plain "Interesting"

    They don't want to publish their prices because either:
    1) The value changes rapidly
    2) They don't wan't competitors to know the price
    3) It's too expensive
    4) If you call them at least they have a chance and try and sell it to you

    My thought is I hate to see that. It bugs me that someone places something up for sale, then drops that big old dead fish out and gives you a POR
