I would not think so, but I have not been around very long.

I like raw coins. They do not cost as much as ones that are slabbed, and I am talking about real slab companies here, and if you want to you can get them slabbed later. True, an uneducated collector can run into some problems, I have and it has been a learning experience, but with education these problems can be avoided.

When buying slabbed, you pay a premium for that coin being in the plastic. I am not saying you should not pay the premium, as this is excellent protection and it cost money to get it slabbed. I'm just saying it would be impractical for me to buy slabbed as I am doing a 7070 type set and slabs do not fit in there. image Plus, I am leery of cracking them open.

I do like the look of a coin in a slab, though, and do own a few special ones.

  • I started this thread because someone in another thread said: "I do like toned coins and coins in slabs, I just don't like the extra cost associated with them" and thought just wait to see how much those raw coins are going to bring when it's time to resell.

Mr. attorney, you have not provided us with nearly enough information upon which to base our answers. It depends upon the particular coins bought, both in and out of the holders, as well as the prices paid. A knowledgeable buyer of uncertified coins might do far better than an unknowledgeable one of certified pieces.

Exactly. There's no substitute for knowledge and numismatic edjamacation.

My simple answer is, buy the coin not the holder. This is said over and over in this forum. If the coin looks like an MS65, you buy it for raw MS63/64 pricing, send it in to be graded, it comes back MS65. Then there is no reason to buy slabs.

You can get good deals either way but if you are good at identifying coin traits such as grade and eye appeal you will get equal value both ways.

Now if you are talking real value for selling after the fact then you need the combination. Buy high grade raw coins with great eye appeal, have them slabbed and they will probably bring in higher than market pricing than a generic coin for a given grade in a slab or raw.

Well, let's try this again. You don't get better "value" but you get a certain peace of mind that (probably) you haven't bought a completely junky piece of crap.

Basically, if you pay a premium for a top slab, you aren't getting "more value". But you are paying extra for something real -- namely, higher liquidity and an "insurance policy" against buying really junky coins for the stated grade.

I tend to get my best deals on raw coins. Between PCGS and NGC coins, I'd say it's a toss up, but only because the question was "personalized".

Where do you get most of your raw coins from?

What Mr.Lustig said. A holder only costs a few bucks when it's time to sell, and I've spent a lifetime negotiating values. image

The coins I buy raw (circulated SLQs, type coins for the Dansco) are much different from the coins I buy slabbed (southern gold), resulting in an apples-to-oranges comparison.

Probably about half from auctions, 25% from collectors and 25% from dealers. And the best of those deals come from auctions.

BTW, I also get most of my worst deals from auctions, but the average return on my money is still just fine, thank you.

I'd say there is no difference for me - we try to find value in slabs and raw coins and the success rate is comparable.
  • It depends on where I'm buying them. If I can see the coins in person (read, coin show or dealer) then no, I don't think I get any extra value from the slab. However, as I have no decent dealer near me I end up buying a lot of coins on Ebay, teletrade etc. In that case the slabs definately add value as they are some insurance that what I'm buying is what the seller says it is.

    So my answer is....it depends.

I rarely buy uncertified coins ; however I am sure that the greatest value is in finding unslabbed high quality coins.

  • I get better value buying raw coins, then slab them and sell them to the slab suckers

Chances are that I get worse value for my dollar buying slabbed coins vs raw since as soon as I get them home they "magically" become raw anyway.image
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.
