I like raw coins. They do not cost as much as ones that are slabbed, and I am talking about real slab companies here, and if you want to you can get them slabbed later. True, an uneducated collector can run into some problems, I have and it has been a learning experience, but with education these problems can be avoided.
When buying slabbed, you pay a premium for that coin being in the plastic. I am not saying you should not pay the premium, as this is excellent protection and it cost money to get it slabbed. I'm just saying it would be impractical for me to buy slabbed as I am doing a 7070 type set and slabs do not fit in there.
I do like the look of a coin in a slab, though, and do own a few special ones.

<< <i>I started this thread because someone in another thread said: "I do like toned coins and coins in slabs, I just don't like the extra cost associated with them" and thought just wait to see how much those raw coins are going to bring when it's time to resell. >>
Hey, that was me!
I'm not into the reselling.

Exactly. There's no substitute for knowledge and numismatic edjamacation.
It's been personalized......Do YOU get better value.....
...the particular coins YOU buy, the prices YOU pay, with YOUR knowledge....geeze, what do you want a BOOK poll?!!!!
Remember my mantra ...Keep it simple, stupid!

edjamacation....that's funny!!! 'Bought as funny as me telling Laura to use good grammar and spelling and spelling grammar incorrectly in my statement to her (which Cherwood caught)!
You can get good deals either way but if you are good at identifying coin traits such as grade and eye appeal you will get equal value both ways.
Now if you are talking real value for selling after the fact then you need the combination. Buy high grade raw coins with great eye appeal, have them slabbed and they will probably bring in higher than market pricing than a generic coin for a given grade in a slab or raw.

Well, let's try this again. You don't get better "value" but you get a certain peace of mind that (probably) you haven't bought a completely junky piece of crap.
Basically, if you pay a premium for a top slab, you aren't getting "more value". But you are paying extra for something real -- namely, higher liquidity and an "insurance policy" against buying really junky coins for the stated grade.
I tend to get my best deals on raw coins. Between PCGS and NGC coins, I'd say it's a toss up, but only because the question was "personalized".

Where do you get most of your raw coins from?

"Hey buddy", the word "you" wasn't and isn't in caps in your thread title. Remember MY mantra....Make it simple, stupid!
Probably about half from auctions, 25% from collectors and 25% from dealers. And the best of those deals come from auctions.
BTW, I also get most of my worst deals from auctions, but the average return on my money is still just fine, thank you.
