I saw that auction this morning. That coin split after the strike, you can tell by the striations all over the reverse. It's a legit error, but the seller has the decimal point in his asking price about four places too far to the right. He should have taken the $150,000 from whoever gave them their estimates.

Incomplete planchets wanted, especially Lincoln Cents & type coins.

Been stuck in a dryer at the laundomat, obverse pinned to the frame surrounding the barrel. Reverse being scraped by the barrel. When enough abrasion takes place, nickel is dislodged and picked up by the dryer serviceman.
I think he's a bit low opening it at $60,000.

So, it's worth about $6 then? I've never seen one. It's kind of neat.

If it split after being struck, how come it still has a "lip" according to the seller? I assume he meant "rim" which can be seen in the pics, I think...

Comes from shooting the picture at an angle to avoid glare from the lights, it gives you a distorted image.

Even a split planchet could stil show part of the rim depending on where the split occured.

I think Heritage sold a 1946 on the wartime planchet a few years ago for $20K. I guess the seller thought this was 3x as rare as that one!

<< <i>I'd pay $59,000 in a heartbeat -- but NO WAY is that thing worth $60,000.
