LIBERTY no more on the new dollar coins

Interesting CW article today mentions that the word "LIBERTY" will NOT be on the new presidential dollars.
"E Pluribus Unum" and "In God We Trust" will remain but be set incuse into the coins edge.
I just thought that was interesting for those who missed it.
Personally I think they should ditch the "In God" part. I'm not opposed to it but weighed against "Liberty", I prefer "Liberty" as traditional American coinage lettering. Also, "Liberty" takes up less space when design is concerned.

But why would we just have "We Trust" floating around on our coins?

Or are they like a commemorative series
They cram a bunch of unnecessary junk onto state quaters, so why can't they figure out how to keep LIBERTY on the coins?

The Sacs are still going to be made. The presidential dollars are supposed to jump start dollar coin circulation....again....
They are going to promote them using their existing marketing budget. I think they've been burned twice before pumping all kinds of money into promoting small dollar coins only to have them flop. As far as circulation and usage goes, my opinion is - here comes flop #3. They will be collected though.
I'll probably stick 'em in a Dansco since I'll own a set by default since I buy a mint set each year. I do think the edge lettering is cool - maybe a new kind of album or holder would is due where the edge lettering can be seen.
BTW, I don't know if it was published anywhere else or online yet. I only saw it in the CW that I got in the mail today.

Cool trivia. Also cool to have edge lettering again.

<< <i>I think the people who fought the revolutionary war to give this country liberty wouldn't like that idea at all.
True, but given that we're less free in many (if not most) ways than the colonies were under George III, they wouldn't like what loss of liberty we've had in the last century either. They might revolt against us now!

I generally like to avoid politics altogether so I reading your post I started with at best a neutral attitude. But unfortunately, you're right on the mark. Well said. --Jerry

`(C) EDGE-INCUSED INSCRIPTIONS-
(i) IN GENERAL- The inscription of the year of minting or issuance of the coin and the inscriptions `E Pluribus Unum' and `In God We Trust' shall be edge-incused into the coin.
Would that mean the date incused on the edge............???

<< <i>I thought by law they were required to have it- then again some laws mean nothing in this country. Talk about an amendment to ban flag burning, how about tacking on one to make Liberty stay. >>
The Colonial people fought for us to have the right to change and you want to deny us the right to change. Our duly elected officials want it removed. If you don't like that concept, run for office yourself.

Yes, here on the forums multiple times back last December when the legislation was still being debated and then while it was waiting for the Presidents signature. I grouched about the removal of LIBERTY on more than one occasion. I admit I had forgotten that the date and mintmark weresupposedto be on the edge of the coin.

Because the atheists are ALWAYS trying to trash this motto, so perhaps removing it a piece at a time will finally get the job done for them. They have no life.................afterlife that is.
