Here are a few new purchases. Let's share some pictures to make this a happy place. 
I'm trying to figure out what's considered wear on these and what are not. If the gilt is removed, it may still be MS. But if it is rubbed off, it may be wear and therefore AU. I'm sending these in for the lesson, but expect AUs on most.
This Trans-Mississippi has really nice proof-like fields. I'm jsut not sure how to call the slight rub spots.
This last one is a great chocolate color. The pictures make it look too red, but not the coppery red. It is brown in hand.

On a related subject, the Manila Bay medal that dealmakr posted a few days ago seems like it might have the marks from a claw hanger at 12:00 on the obverse and reverse (Dave, can you confirm?). If so, they seem not to have kept it out of an MS64 holder when I would have sort of expected them to be counted as 'damage' that prevents slabbing.
For the record, I am NOT criticizing NGC, I'm just trying to understand.

In grading medals you have to be able to think outside the box in comparison to the grading of coins and take into account the manufacturing process also which varies greatly. A lot of SCD's were produced only as badges some as both badges and medals. I think that damage to a medal would have to be more indicative of a gouge, many scratches , severe corrosion of the metal or something of the like. A removed clasp especially the type that is pinched together on this piece, I believe is taken into account as it was an original integral part of the piece when issued and doesn't detract from the medal itself for holdering when removed. There are some loops and clasps depending on type (usually when drilled, soldered, etc, into the metal) that would leave quite a bit of damage upon removal and would probably not be gradeable as such. I have submitted medals that are looped and have had them graded like the WW2 victory piece.
