I stopped selling on Ebay right around the time that summer started because the prices were terrible! I might consider going back if we see evidence of them being better..

I didn't know eBay coin prices were ever better than "terrible". Unless I'm bidding, of course.
It depends on what is being sold. Here's my take as I sell rather frequently
A few weeks ago, I recieved back a nice selection of early type coins from PCGS including some 1855 half cents, three cents LC and early Draped half. They did very well on e-bay ! However, the Morgans did not, but I expected that. Recently, I had some nice problem free coins listed with no reserve but raw, and took a bath on them. It appears to be that many segments of the e-bay market are showing signs of real weakness, but specific earlier type are not. I have not been able to find too many keys at a good enough price to sell on e-bay lately, but the ones I have, sold for about typical, nothing great. The one trend that has developed on e-bay is that many folks are not buying raw coins, even if nice for fear they are being taken, or screwed. (with good reason), however, it hurts a seller like myself, becuase I have to pass on lots of nice coins, becuase there is no money left for me to buy them and leave room for TPG costs and associated e-bay costs. It looks like I will have to curtail this selectivity even more.

Interesting comments regarding the raw coins. It looks like the scammer factor is really affecting the realizations.
Hi, Hope you don't mind this message. I see your are a member of the CUFYNA. Can you tell me whom I can contact to offer free coin collecting software to the YNA associations? I had donated quite a few to one of the guys working with the YNA of the ANA but have lost touch with him. Our software (NumisEXPERT) provides prices, identifies errors and varieties and a lot of other things. Pls email if you have the time: Thanks! Janemail address Jan
U.S. coin collector since 1943. Have tried desperatly to keep every coin that has come to hand, but unfortunately, some got away.
I just sold a few Marine comemoratives and Franklin comms as well as the Marine Coin and stamp set. I didn't get above $48.00 for any of them. I did make the mistake of miscalculating the PDT time the wrong way and they ended at 1:00 am. That may have been a factor.
It seems after insertion fee's, final value fee's, Paypal fee's, packaging, and hitting the Post Office, there isn't much left over. I guees if I obtained my coins for free, I would profit handsomly. Sometimes I wonder what the hell I'm doing. I'm curious what Feebay nets in a month. I bet it's more than I'd make in 100 life times. One way to save is to host your pics, and use their one free pic option. I imagine they will eventually prevent the seller from hosting, and force you to pay for extra pics. Who is making $75k annually on Feebay?? Tell us your secret.

I'm in your boat as well. I see little benefit in spending $15 in cetification fees so that I can get $30 for a coin instead of $15. The standing assumption seems to be that if you're selling a raw $30 coin with a good picture that is obviously BU, it must really be a doctored AG coin, otherwise it would be slabbed. I will probably go to a fixed price list that I maintain on the web and be more selective with the eBay offerings.
Most of the last stuff I sold I didn't even get near FMV for...the only stuff that did well was my early copper pieces and even here I didn't sell anything for huge money. I've stepped way back on selling coins on ebay. I think I'll go to the BST Forum first rather than put up with the headaches of selling on ebay.

I've found almost the same thing. I'm just about done with Ebay as an outlet for most items, and will be listing only items that seem to do better there than at the shows.
I tried .99 starts for a few months on 40+ items, and even the cheapest wholesale buyers at the shows are usually paying more than the net realized through Ebay after the fees (listing, final value and paypal), for what I usually list.
It wasn't always like this, and I do believe bidders are not as aggressive on Ebay as they used to be.
With a strong market, it's surprising in a way, but the strength seems to be at the shows. Again, for me and with the type I sell.
With 6000+ sales(5,500+ feedback with 3 total negatives...all in last year on items totaling $35.00!!) this is one of the few topics I can address with some confidence............
Quality of bidders is declining. The rookies now are just that. Totally naive. Demanding and quick to complain about everything. Definately the 0-10 feedback bidders are worse than I've ever seen.
I shut down my auctions for summer and will restart after labor day. Too many other thing going on in summer both for me and bidders. Long days and warm weather gives people less time and inclination to sit inside and play with computer.
The nature of the eBay market was best explained to me by a friend who sells antique radios there. "If I listed the same auction for a stack of 20 new $5 bills each week, with free shipping, they might sell for $47 one week and $127 the next."

I will no longer be able to pay those fair prices for items that I plan on re- selling on e-bay!
