Green Holder

I have seen a few green holder PCGS graded coins. I do remember reading that certain holders are indictative of a time when PCGS was harsher on grading. In fact, I believe I recall reading that PCGS even encourages people to send in coins in certain old holders as they are often upgraded.

I am curious which holders those are. I have been offered a coin in a green holder that looks great at MS63. Any experience with getting an upgrade by turning in a green holder coin and not risking crack out?

Some would argue quite convincingly that their grading standards are tougher now.

Old Green Holders are overrated. Many of the coins in those holders with upgrade potential already were sent in and many upgraded. A lot of what remains is grade appropriate and even overgraded. Sending them in is just wasting time and money and making CU more than it deserves. Yes, there are still some OGHs out there that can upgrade. There are blue holders too that can as well. Buy the coin, not the holder ..... even if it is green tagged,

I remember reading an interview of David Hall where he said coins graded early in the game were graded a bit too conservatively (at least in the high mint state grades). Unfortunately, he was refering to the old rattler slabs, not the green holders.

And Coxe is right in saying what remains in the market has already been looked over for upgradable pieces. Basicly what you see is what you'll get; nothing more.

I would place an "unless" in there somewhere. I was just taking a look at my best friends Dads collection of Saints. Most are in OGH, most he purchased over 10years ago. Some are stunningly toned wit orange and green, and I saw an MS61 that blew me away it was so undergraded.

So, unless those old holders have been in a collection for years and the owner could care less about picking through them for upgrades, they may be picked over.

That's right too. My set has plenty of OGH coins and even great, conservative ANACS slabs. I may resubmit and cross them when it's time to sell, though maybe not. Some of us keep the old ones that were acquired "back then" and spend the $$$ it would take to resubmit to buy coins instead. The OGHs and fat NGC slabs I have now in NBHs and thinner NGC slabs are there only because I sent them i for variety attribution (but not regrade) and/or reholdering.

I think it's a double-edged sword. There are some coins which lack a newer designation (cam, dcam, fh,etc) that would warrant a regrade, and there are also some coins that would be upgraded, but I have cracked open 3 Barber halves from 'green labels' that looked undergraded (to my eyes) and they all came back BB'd for altered surfaces, or cleaning...and I simply cracked 'em and put them directly into the flips for submittal. I took a chance by not resubmitting in holder, and got burned. But in a few years, they could be entombed again, since they did pass muster at one time.........You pays yur money and takes yur chances!

Somebody beat me to it, but I agree:

When I get an opportunity to see a fresh collection, (one that has been off the market for 6-10yrs) I find that I am able to locate a much higher % of PQ examples and /or potential undergrades. They dont come through often enough

I have yet to have a problem submitting coins that are already holdered, I dont do it a lot, but so far so good. The guys who play the crackout game....well, all bets are off. Good luck.
