  i believe it's for private message, an option to allow or not in your profile

  particulate matter
  n. Abbr. PM
  Material suspended in the air in the form of minute solid particles or liquid droplets, especially when considered as an atmospheric pollutant.
  
  past master
  n.
  One who has formerly held the position of master in an organization, especially a social one such as a lodge or club.
  One who is thoroughly experienced and skilled in a particular craft or activity.
  
  phase modulation
  n. Abbr. pm or p-m
  A type of electronic modulation in which the phase of a carrier wave is varied in order to transmit the information contained in the signal.
  
  Pm
  The symbol for the element promethium.
  
  P.M. also p.m. or P.M.
  abbr.
  post meridiem.
  Usage Note: By definition, 12 A.M. denotes midnight, and 12 P.M. denotes noon, but there is sufficient confusion over the meanings of A.M. and P.M. when the hour is 12 to make it advisable to use 12 noon and 12 midnight where clarity is required.

  Private Message...........
  If you want to use this option, click the "profile" box just below the
  navigation window located in the upper right hand section of this
  screen. Your personal profile will pop up. Look for the option that
  says "Allow private messages" and select "yes".
  Now you're all set. To send a private message, click the "lock" icon
  in the upper right area of anyone's posting and you can send a message
  to only that one person. It's just like sending an e-mail to someone but
  you don't have to type in their e-mail address.
