Wicked hit...

I was looking at this recent find and was rally happy until I looked hard at the reverse.
There is a WICKED hit on the left wing.
Is there ANY chance that the coin was minted this way , or was it handled and hit. It just seems to be in a strange location, and the damage does not extend past the edge of the wing. The obverse is juat for your review.
Other than that how was the PLay Mrs Lincoln?
Opinions , Grade?
Any chance there is a die break on the Reverse Rim Left side? I dont know what I am seeking so I am asking a buch of dumb questions...
Thanks!!!

Well it might not, necessarily, since the wing is higher than the field around it, obviously.
It's bagmarked and has been banged around a bit, but that doesn't really bother me. Morgans are big, heavy coins, and they got marked. The hit on the left wing (actually, the eagle's right wing), makes it a rather typical coin. Average. Certainly not one of exceptional quality, but not horrible, either. I've seen worse. This just looks like a generic-quality Morgan with a somewhat bigger-than-average mark on the wing. The rest of it looks all right.
Grade? I dunno. Can't tell if I am actually seeing rub on some of the high points, there, or if it's just flatly struck in places. I would grade it AU55 to AU58 if it has rub, MS60 to MS61 if it doesn't.
Die break on the reverse rim, left side? I dunno there, either. Looks like there is something goin' on there, maybe. I will defer to the VAM specialists who might recognize such a variety.
PS- your wearing dthigpen's icon threw me off, for a minute.
Am I taking someone Elses Icon? I will change it...
There appear to be two die breaks--one from the rim through the left wingtip and the D, the other from the U to the star.
Looks like a die crack is runnjng through the tops of ERI of america also.
That is a nasty hit on the wing.
The coin looks softly struck.IMO.

Would this fit any VAM designation? The die cracks are not breaks but seem to be in some of the same areas
Thanks Again..

I have seen this quite a few times and have a couple of them. It is often mistaken for the relatively new VAM-47A because the crack from D to S throught he right (viewer's left) wing is very close to that one's. It is not. I forget which variety it indeed is, but it is a common one.

Die cracks protrude out of the coin. The mark on your coin digs into the coin. It's not a die crack.

<< <i>I think its probably just a weak strike. The "rub" I see over the ear on on the eagles' breast I think is attributable to this. The fields are just too clean for anything less than MS...I'd venture a guess of MS62 (that is a pretty major hit on the wing)...L >>
I agree with you. MS62 easy enough, but... it really does look like the finish on a coin that sat in a vinyl flip for a long, long time.
