I actually made a jackpot off a mystery lot!!!

So I got some really nice coins from this mystery lot....... I got over 2 ounces of silver. Also, I received a 1963-P Franklin thats at least PF 66 (don't know price tag on that) I got some wheat cents that were uncirculated (red cents????) I received some other silver proof coins. Including 2 silver dimes that are at leas MS 65 or better...... Plus I received some very nice mercurys with toning. Thats just the highlights!! I think I hit the jackpot this time!!! Let me know of your opinons!!!

  • That's pretty cool. I have to admit, the idea of sorting through a true "mystery" lot does hold a certain appeal. Of course, any purchase made on eBay involves some degree of mystery until the coin is actually in hand. Glad you're happy with your purchase. image

Do not waste your money on mystery lots. Nine times out of a million will you benefit. Whether you are a newbie or someone who likes to gamble it is a bad deal. You would be better off spending your money on a coin that you really want. Never expect something for nothing, because most everytime it is not going to happen. Or learn on your own!image Sometimes you have to go to school to learn. -Dan

OK, guys - take it to the OF image

Meanwhile, nice score! Although I do agree that Ebay mystery lots are a losing gamble in the long run.

Wasn't always so, but there are just too many "Richards" out there these days.

And I know that the OP knows how I feel already image

One can be banned from a casino for card counting. Really good gamblers can card count. Really great ones don't get caught image
Shouldn't ASSume (ie....say that "tells you something right there").

Mystery lots usually suck. If you would take the money and throw it away, and you are a neophyte collector, then go for it. They can be fun.
However, don't presume to think you got something great. can you accurately grade the coins, or are you treating as bullion (you stated the "haul" in ounces of silver...only mentioned merc that are toned and a proof).
Are the mercs AT or ED? Or, NT?
What would they grade? I don't see a lot of "toned" circ ones, unless someone was practicing.....

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

With all the con artists out there, and they are out there, it is easy to see why the general consensus is that mystery lots are for suckers. I fall into that camp.

I seem to be missing something, two ounces of silver for $38 doesn't sound like the deal of the century to me. A common Franklin half in PF66 isn't particularly valuable. Even certified they can be bought for $15, if raw for $7. An entire 1963 proof set is usually less than $15 unless the Franklin is lock cameo. Red wheats can be had for $1 or $2. Raw Mercs unless MS66+ for $5. Sounds like at the upper end $50 in retail value of coins, for $38 (plus shipping?). I would not exactly call this a "jackpot" when the wholesale value is probably closer to $30. If sold retail, the coins would probably net about the same $38 that was paid after deducting fees.

Mystery lots can be fun as gifts, but most collectors usually do much better shopping for what they want. Some mystery lot buyers get the shaft like the other recent thread where someone paid $17 for $4 retail value of coins in mystery lots.

Mystery lots are only a mystery to the buyer.... not the seller.

Pont, 63-P Franky could be PR or MS.... through PR66 is low end and carries no premium.

Mystery lots are for gamblers. The majority of gamblers lose because that's the way the house sets it up. For every person that wins on a mystery lot, the other 90% lose. And the wins on these are far and few between. Now if there are some uncatalogued lots and the seller is a newbie there is a better chance to score. Those do happen, and the scores can be amazing. But for a steady seller of mystery lots? Avoid them as there is essentially zero chance to gain. The casino has far better odds (close to 50-50 on some games).
