To what extent does your wife know about your coin "problem"?

I broke.....after 4 years I told her about HALF of what I had after an unending badgering attack. I was weak. I blew it. image

At least "half of half" is better than the worse case scenario. image

Fess up, you weaklings. image

My wife thinks I'm addicted. That much is true. I think my wife has my collection valued at about half it's true value.

I've been slowly bringing my wife along. I don't think I have gotten to "HALF" yet, but she is beginning to have a better idea. Earlier this year at FUN I took her and about $20k in coins and she watched as I sold them and bought others. I think it helped that she understood the liquidity side of the market, and that the money was not just blown.

BTW, you are still a wuss! image

My wife knows about everything I have, I have a docuement that I update and print out every time I travel by plane or undergo surgical procedures that indicates all the financial, insurance, computer passwords etc that I have.

So she knows everything. One time I told her how much my collection was valued at by a particular periodical. It's a fairly good value, at least as far as I'm concerned. All she did was look at it and said, "is that all?" I don't know if she really has a good grasp on the value of moneyimage

After I told her what OUR coins were worth when I bought them, and what they are worth now, she is good with it. So when I buy a new coin, she does not even question me.

My wife is an accountant and nothing gets by her. As long as I keep the purchases within a reasonable "budget", she's cool.

  • She's not my wife yet, but she's aware and pretends to be interested at times. She always asks me if this or that coin she finds in circulation is anything special, she's had one or two interesting finds over the years (like a 50-d Jefferson)

I don't have a coin problem. I can stop any time I want to.

She knows. Plus she also knows I'm responsible about it and only spend what we can well afford on coins. Right now, while we're trying to sell our last house (which is costing us nearly $2K per month in cash flow until it sells), the coin budget is almost zero. When we sell the house, not zero any more. I don't hide anything from her, she knows I don't bite off more than we can chew, she knows that unlike a lot of the stuff she buys, my stuff can usually hold its value or appreciate long term, so there are no problems here.

It's not a coin "problem" precisely because she doesn't know it all.

Probably most of us don't really have a problem, in all seriousness, but spouses do not always understand why a nickel would be worth millions. Some fear this coin fad might fizzle and it would revert to being worth five cents. Nice to have history on your side.

Problem? What problem? I can quit any time - really.

But yes, she knows about it, and encourages it. It's a lot cheaper (in the long run) than some of my other hobbies have been.

My wife is pretty understanding, but doesn't really like the "details". Typically after a larger purchase I might hear about the need for new furniture or car or ???. Its kind of a trade off thing. When I explain the difference in "value" and "appreciation over time", I'm reminded that you can't sit comfortably on a coin... image

She knows some of the quantities, but is really not cognizent of the values. She thinks $200, it's $2000; she thinks $1000, it could be $10,000, and so on, and so on. They are written down inside of each storage box in the bank vault though. And she knows who to see in the event of my untimely demise.image

Hey, as long as she gets a neat set of wheels, a new house in a few years, etc., she's happy. Besides, she has over 60 pairs of shoes, maybe 100 pairs!!!! And, you dare infer I have an OCD.image

My wife knows I have about $200-250 tied up in coins. Since value is speculative, I simply quoted the face value. For me, that's about 400-500 coins. She thinks they're in saranwrap™ since I told her my better ones are in plastic.

Our net worth has increased by approximately 2,500% in the last eight years. My wife trusts my judgment, which has so far been good. Knock wood. She does not get too worked up about particulars, and in the scheme of things the coin collection is small potatoes. I am very comfortable with that.

Not quite married-yet. But my parents don't know that I deal with a lot more people than they think. My mom's mostly the one I worry about the most because she worries about every single thing-It's the most annoying thing in the world.

But yeh, my collection has grown a lot larger than what my parents/ relatives know. The reason being is that they would be scared and excited at the same time.
