Coin Dealer Ken Byrd retires from the Air Force today.

I just wanted to acknowledge the fact that Colorado Springs coin dealer, Ken Byrd's official retirement ceremony from 26 years servi ce in the Air Force is being held in Washington D. C. today. Ken has often used his military leave time to come and help us run the Baltimore Coin and Currency Convention, and has helped run club shows in Colorado Springs and other places. I just received the following email from Steve Howard and feel that it says it all.

Ken has had an amazing career and is too modest to discuss the major impact he has had on the defense of this great nation. Over the last 26-plus years Ken has served, he has provided leadership and advice to our nation's leaders at the highest levels. He has provided advice and counsel to the Secretary of Defense, to the Vice President, and to the President. He has been a behind-the-scenes leader that helped our Nation win the Cold War, won DESERT STORM, the conflicts in the Balkans, and fight the global war on terrorism. Ken's modesty and professionalism has kept him from "tooting his horn." Therefore today I am his trumpeter. He and his family have made numerous sacrifices--too numerous to mention. Ken is an American Hero who has faced adversities that none of you will ever experience. He has faced the hard decisions that military men are expected to face and always did the right thing. I know of no officer who has served his country with more candor, honesty and integrity. I am proud to have served with him, and even prouder to call him my friend. I wish I could be there for his retirement, but he knows I'm there in spirit. When you next see him and Peggy, look them in the eye, shake their hand and say "Thank You!" They will know what it is for and will understand. No one can really re-pay Ken and his family for what they have done to keep this Nation free. God Bless the Byrd family, the President, and the United States of America.

Ken is indeed a first class gentleman, truly a stand up guy and always very courteous to his customers.

Congratulations on your retirement, Ken. I hope that you are able to make numismatics your next profession.

I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

  • Dear Mr. Byrd, This post is awesome! Congrats on your retirement. Thank you for your service and dedication to this great land. Freedom does not come easy, there's sacrifice, pain and many hours of hard work. It's time for you to turn your duties over to the next generation and I have no doubt they will carry this torch with dignity and unwavering commitment, such as you have done. To repeat, God Bless your family, the President, and America.image

Is he the dealer who teaches classes on large cents at the summer ANA?
I manage money. I earn money. I save money .
I give away money. I collect money.
I don’t love money . I do love the Lord God.

I think his final stint with the Air Force for the last couple years was in Idaho.
I hope to see him back at the Denver shows.

    Congratulations Ken !
