Photographing Toned Proof Coins.. anyone use axial lighting (through angled glass) to get the color?

I was wondering what experience people had doing that.
Philately will get you nowhere....

Looks fiamiliar. I know that drawing. Axial lighting can be kind of fiddly, and you do need a pretty good distance between the coin and the camera so you can fit a piece of glass in between.

One thing to think about when you look at the drawing in the second post. Light from the right side can just as easily bounce off of the glass and go into the camera. Make sure that something dark is on that side (opposite the light)

  • It would be nice if Brandon would sketch out his set up.

    In a nutshell:

Copystand, Camera, 3 or 4 lights, photoshop 7.0 to crop and resize, and bulletproof ftp to upload to the website. Mix all these ingredients together then combine with 6000+ coins to practice with over several years. Finally, add a quart of obsessive compulsive perfectionism and bake at 350 for 2 hours or until a toothpick can be inserted and removed and stay clean. image
