Sweat Out the Close of Teletrade

Wonder who all ended up with those VAM-203 1878 Rev 79 Morgans. I bid on 3 of them and a couple other VAMs. INteresting to see seven of them show up together. Someone must have had a roll.

Got all five that I bid on.

Lot 1194 1878 MGC 63 VAM-203 -- retag and resell. Nice for the grade
Lot 1198 1878 NGC 64 VAM-203 -- The best of the bunch IMO
I had a strong bid on this MS64. Might be an upgrade candidate. Certainly looks good for the grade
    Lot 1201 1878 NGC 65 VAM-203 -- I thought lot 1202 was better but
the value was in this lot and my experience with TT images suggested this might be the better one. Can't wait to get it to see if it is crossable
Lot 1346 1897 NGC 65 VAM-6A -- just another one but price was right
    Lot 1363 1901 PCGS 58 -- looks VAM-16 to me

  • Nice score image Check your pm.
  • Did you see the 78-CC VAM6 in PCGS 64?? I believe that a couple of 63's are the highest graded before this one.

I am looking to cherry one of those form a dealer. Too many of us guys would catch on to one of those and also that is a variety I don't have for reference and am not sure I can trust my interpretation of TT images of it. Gotta recognize my limitations. On the 1878-CC, I am just cherrying the VAM-7A. Got a sweet VAM-11 in 64DMPL; soI stopped really looking for high grade ones of those. Did you win that 78-CC?

  • I didn't win it. I was high bidder at $800 up until the last second. I was sure that you outbid me, but I guess someone else noticed it. I have a 63 and a 62, but would have loved a pop 1/0. Its easy to recognize - - basically you need two things: (1) rightmost "C" in mintmark touching the wreath, and (2) Obverse leaves doubled around cotton bolls.

I am sure you'll cherry a 64 or 65 somewhere. The pops for the date support it and this is a die pairing not a state so I wouldn't expect it to be horribly elusive, just takes spotting it like you did on TT. We'll see if anyone won it or if it was a reserve game.

  • I'll bet someone won it - - otherwise the VAM 6 would have been mentioned in the description. In other words, the seller was probably shocked at his "good fortune" with the selling price.

I didn't see the 1878-cc VAM-6, but I bid on four of the 203's and won one, the toner Lot 1196 I also bid on that 1897 6a you won, but I already have a MS65, so I didn't bid very strong.

mooser, you got that one for a good price: reverse toner and Top-100 VAM. I conisdered that one too but didn't want to hog them all. The 6A is going to be a resale. I have it in PCGS 66 and 65 already and was going to sell the 65 anyway. Wouldn't have bid the next increment for it. The price was just right.

  • Just checked TT - - the 78-CC sold for $825 (plus the vig).

$900-$1K coin in my opinion. So the price was about right. If I was chasing it and really wanted it, my bid probably would have been $875 -- perhaps the winner's was in that ballpark.

I got the 1878-CC VAM-6. Its a nice coin so I was bidding strong. It was at common, ~$500, with a minute left. I had hoped nobody had noticed! No such luck!

I also saw all the short leafs and put a low bid on one of the 63s but didn't win. I think I cost Coxe a $20 or so... maybe not if someone else was bidding as well. I have some already so unless I could steal them at common price, I wasn't serious.
