Will the Benefits of ANS Membership be Wasted on a Lowly Collector of U.S Federal Coinage?

I’ve visited the ANS website many times. My impression is that it’s a club for well-heeled, erudite types who search out coins I’ve never heard of in places unfamiliar to me. The ANS makes my ANA membership seem like a ticket to see Single-A ball when the Yankees are playing across town. But will the benefits of joining the ANS be wasted on someone who collects narrowly in the field of U.S Federal coinage?

Actually, I believe you can use the library and view the collection regardless of whether or not you are a member. How cool is that?

Personally, I belong to both organizations, each has their own place.

I'll take the complete (well, almost complete; thanks Coinosaurus) lack of response to mean that I'd be wasting my money.

The journal that the ANS produces is fantastic and the dinner invitations are quite tempting, though I am generally too far away to attend these events.

You have everything to gain by joining. The new ANS magazine while slow to be distributed is quite a nice addition to your Numismatic library and reference area.

Would joining the SGS satisfy my desire to associate with well-heeled, erudite types?

I have found it to be a waste. The magazine is indeed beautiful, but the articles are of little interest to me.

The ANS is similar to the ANA and most organizations. If you make the effort to take advantage of their services, membership is an incredible bargain.

As a member, I've used the ANS library, viewed portions of the ANS collection and attended a number of ANS lectures, conferences and social gatherings. I'd encourage you to join and do the same.
