Cool Morgan counterclash

messydeskmessydesk Posts: 20,315 ✭✭✭✭✭
It looks like a doubled profile with clash marks from the reverse wreath at first glance, but what appears to be a doubled profile is actually a counterclash. When the dies first clashed, the alignment was changed slightly. The clash marks on the reverse die were then transferred back to the obverse die in a second clash and effectively "re-hubbed" part of the obverse die. Note the notch in the doubling at mid-nose. Had this been a doubled die, there'd be no notch. This is the discovery 1880 VAM 50A (also has doubled 80 and lower reverse), which was sent back to its owner today.

Cool looking coin. 1880 seems to be a treasure trove of VAMs. . . image

I have a couple of coins like that, I was wondering if it was a secondary die clash or transfer of a clash. Nice to know what I was surmising is correct. I also have some coins that have had two or three clashes, with rotation of the die by three or four millimeters. Makes for an interesting coin.
