New 1831 Bust Half

I picked up this piece at a coin show in Wichita last weekend.

It's my second example of this date, but I believe this one is an O-103. I'd say a square VF.

I noted the fine crack at the base of the date, which is where I reached my opinion.

I know there are a number of experts on this board, so I was wondering what others thought.

....I'm not familiar with that term, but I'm hoping it means something better than it sounds.

here's my other 1831. I believe this one is superior in grade. The toning didn't come through on the scan very well. There is a lot of blue undertone around the outside - it came out dark in the scan, which is unfortunate.

Actually, I think your new one is 111 rather than 103. As for your first one it looks to be 108. Gradewise, I would say strong VF (30-35) on your new one and XF on the other.
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.
  • Thanks!

I actually just completed a trade to a friend on this new one for a VF grade 1824, which is a date I don't have yet for my collection. That has to be a record for the shortest amount of time a coin has resided in my collection. image

After consideration, I thought I would try and assemble different dates before different varieties.
  • Here's my new 1824. I feel like it was a highly generous trade from my friend. The scan (as usual with scans) doesn't do this coin justice.

with this coin, I am 1/10 of the way to qualifying for the BHNC image

Exactly the same position each of us was when we bought our 10th coin. It's not a sprint! Patience is required. And those are some nice coins.

Yeah. I'll get there eventually. I'm trying to focus on better grades of circulation (although sometimes those lower grades can come with lots of beautiful character that is pretty hard to resist!).

Bust Halves are my secondary focus. I like them, but not as much as I like early colonial 2 reales.

I've found it's better to work slow and buy careful. It's easier to regret the coin you didn't buy, than it is to regret the one you did.

Bump... not to be self serving, but I think this thread deserves page one more than the 8th degree variant of the same topic.
