As a 21 year member, I plan to look VERY closely at who is running for the Board of Governors next year and what their platforms are. I do NOT like the way the current administration is being run. I want to see change. We will see how other members feel and how they ACT at the next election. Steve
The garbage going on in the ANA in the Cipoletti era is exactly why I would never become a life member. If I've already paid them for life, what leverage and influence do I have remaining? (It's not like I'd be paying any more membership dues.)

It is going to take a group of people who will stand up to the executive director and tell him that things are going to change and not back down.
All I know about the ANA is they were severly annoying with all their talking and speaches before they opened the doors in Denver on Tuesday. Dealers inside waiting, collectors outside waiting and we gotta listen to a dozen stiffs in cardboard suits go on and on about how great they and their organization are.

Before Cipoletti became executive director, the ANA required its nine-member, elected board of governors to sign a pledge of confidentiality to safeguard auctioneering bids and other contracts. Cipoletti has extended the concept to volunteers and staff.
Surprised he hasn't considered a requirement to sign an oath of loyalty to renew your ANA membership too.
I thought long and hard before sending in my membership dues for the next year. I hope to see a much different board elected this session....I may be just dreaming. Hopefully changes will be made that appease the members and the secrecy crap will be done away with. Pehaps the position of execitive director or whatever Mr. Cipoletti is called, will be done away with(along with Mr. Cipoletti). Perhaps nothing significant will change. If not there will be one less member this time next year.

I've decided not to renew my membership this year. I'll join if 1)I see that there are enough elected Governors engaging their action plan to educate or protect coin buyers, and 2) if the ANA appoints an experienced numismatist instead of a lawyer as executive director.

ccex, by not renewing your ANA membership, you are letting the current board have a better chance of winning because of minimal opposition. By not renewing, the current executive director will still have his job because there will be one less member who will, with others, pressure the board to call for his resignation. When there is more unity, then there is more strength - but when there is less unity, then you'll get nothing but weakness.

<< <i>So do I, and the clowns on the board will have to deal with me really soon! >>
<< <i>So if you were voted onto the board what specific changes would you pursue as new board member? >>
1) Calling for the immediate resignation of the current Excecutive Director (which will require a group of board members to do). Set up new guidelines in the selection of a new Excecutive Director, making sure that such person will not have any conflicts of interest, and set a salary which will not bankrupt the ANA.
2) Re-writing the confidentiality agreement to cover only personel, disciplinary, and financial matters (which is normal in most organizations). Contractual matters (such as auctions) would be openly discussed. Heritage should not be given special treatment. Also, volunteers and staff would no longer be required to sign such agreement.
3) Every year, have the auctioneer duties rotated among recognized numismatic auction firms. For example, ANR - 2007, Superior - 2008, Stacks - 2009, Heritage - 2010, and Bowers - 2011. The playing field for the auctions needs to be fair.
4) Push for electronic voting. The last election some members did not receive their ballots. This is a disservice to our members.
I can think of more, but what I have posted is a start.

The "gag" order that the new board members have to agree with is going to doom any reform effort right from the start.
Several well meaning people who have run in the past on a "reform" platform have been silenced.

So do I, and the clowns on the board will have to deal with me really soon!
So if you were voted onto the board what specific changes would you pursue as new board member?
I give away money. I collect money.
I don’t love money . I do love the Lord God.
