Would (Or Has) The Current Situation With The ANA Affect Your Decision

To join, renew your membership, or become a life member of the ANA?

As a 21 year member, I plan to look VERY closely at who is running for the Board of Governors next year and what their platforms are. I do NOT like the way the current administration is being run. I want to see change. We will see how other members feel and how they ACT at the next election. Steveimage

The garbage going on in the ANA in the Cipoletti era is exactly why I would never become a life member. If I've already paid them for life, what leverage and influence do I have remaining? (It's not like I'd be paying any more membership dues.)

No, I could not care less about that crap.

The "gag" order that the new board members have to agree with is going to doom any reform effort right from the start.

Several well meaning people who have run in the past on a "reform" platform have been silenced.

If someone can figure out a way to get around this I would like to know what it is.

The only thing I can think of is to rally behind Board candidates who pledge to do away with this secrecy, get them elected and hold them to their promises.

It is going to take a group of people who will stand up to the executive director and tell him that things are going to change

All I know about the ANA is they were severly annoying with all their talking and speaches before they opened the doors in Denver on Tuesday. Dealers inside waiting, collectors outside waiting and we gotta listen to a dozen stiffs in cardboard suits go on and on about how great they and their organization are.

I think the problems aren't nearly as bad as some would think. Regardless, I'll always be a member, if for no other reason than to have a greater role in improving the organization.

Before Cipoletti became executive director, the ANA required its nine-member, elected board of governors to sign a pledge of confidentiality to safeguard auctioneering bids and other contracts. Cipoletti has extended the concept to volunteers and staff.

Surprised he hasn't considered a requirement to sign an oath of loyalty to renew your ANA membership too.

  • I thought long and hard before sending in my membership dues for the next year. I hope to see a much different board elected this session....I may be just dreaming. Hopefully changes will be made that appease the members and the secrecy crap will be done away with. Pehaps the position of execitive director or whatever Mr. Cipoletti is called, will be done away with(along with Mr. Cipoletti). Perhaps nothing significant will change. If not there will be one less member this time next year.

I dropped my membership years ago. The crap going on there now is the same crap that's been going on for many years. Just the faces are different.

I know one prominent dealer that resigned his lifetime membership last year because of their shenanigans only to have it refused! image

Their problems are systemic and it's going to take some real work to clean it up before it goes over the cliff.

I feel the same. I can't have a voice if I don't belong, and I believe that there is a need for a strong ANA. It's important to have an organization which can speak for the collecting community at large.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

As a member of the ANA since 1991 (and a life member since 2000), the troubles with the ANA is a wake-up call to those who are concerned about the direction of the hobby (and the direction of the ANA), membership in the ANA is a must to help create change. I know that there are those on this forum who know that I have been raising a stink about the ANA problems, and there are those who want me to shut up about the subject. To think that all's well in Colorado Springs and we need not worry about the secretive activities of the ANA board. That is pure, 100% BULLOCKS!!!!!. For one, if you want change in the ANA and also really make a difference in the direction of the hobby, it would be foolish not to join. I look at it this way - if one person, or, if one group wants to make a difference in the direction of the "king of hobbies", I'd rather be a member and make it happen than be somone who is not a member and do nothing.

What would the volunteers and staff have that is so top secret? They pretty much know NOTHING! Making them sign a confidentiality agreement is no different than making a citizen of China pledge that they are a Communist even though he does not agree to any of their ideology. It is just wrong.

Tassa - How come? If I were you, I'd get the Life Membership just in case the ANA gets stupid and raises them. Its been $1,000 for about a couple of years (from $750) - now, if been a member of the ANA for a number of years, you can get a reduction on your dues - I believe $10 for every year as a member. So if you've been a member for, lets say, 5 years, the cost of a life membership is $950 - $50 savings. Check with their membership department on this. I took the plunge in 2000 and my life membership was $660 (for being a member 9 years at the $750 rate).

Remember this fund raising fiasco from last year?

    image

Pretty much killed by member outrage and bad publicity. How dare they publish my information with an opt-out plan rather than express permission?

There are alot of good reasons to still be an ANA member. Not the least of which is the ANA number. Fact is I buy alot of coins for my collection site unseen. I would not consider buying from a dealer without an ANN number.

I also get access to discounted insurance by being a member so for that reason alone, I will continue to pay the annual member fee.

But there are definite reasons to be skeptical of this ANA under the auspices of the Cipoletti administration.

BTW: I like the magazine too Amanda image

Just under 2 years ago, I was severely tempted to join the ANA.
I didn't see a ton of benefits to me, but figured there would be something useful and I could support the hobby.

Then, this ANA scandal hit. I have not joined.
I have no desire to join currently.

They win NO members by their actions and they LOSE potential members (as well as current ones).

Name someone who renewed membership or joined because of their recent headlines (either the naming of the museum I believe it was or the ousting of their board member in the related scandal).

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

  • I was so disgusted by their antics that I almost didn't but I decided to join anyway hoping that I could help throw the bums out. So when does the next election come around?

I've decided not to renew my membership this year. I'll join if 1)I see that there are enough elected Governors engaging their action plan to educate or protect coin buyers, and 2) if the ANA appoints an experienced numismatist instead of a lawyer as executive director.

It seems to me that Cipoletti is a fairly accomplished lawyer and legal mind. His role as ANA Counsil is his real forte. But occupying both the role of ANA Counsil and ANA Executive Director is most definitely a a conflict of interest, IMHO. At a time when membership is on the rise and cash should be flowing into the association, we are hemmorhidging cash! Can you believe that at a time when the Hobby is enjoying its acme of popularity that our Association has produced 4 consecutive years of Red Ink? Methinks the lawyer should stick to lawyering and let a real manager man the helm as ED. image

ccex, by not renewing your ANA membership, you are letting the current board have a better chance of winning because of minimal opposition. By not renewing, the current executive director will still have his job because there will be one less member who will, with others, pressure the board to call for his resignation. When there is more unity, then there is more strength - but when there is less unity, then you'll get nothing but weakness.

    1) Calling for the immediate resignation of the current Excecutive Director (which will require a group of board members to do). Set up new guidelines in the selection of a new Excecutive Director, making sure that such person will not have any conflicts of interest, and set a salary which will not bankrupt the ANA.

    2) Re-writing the confidentiality agreement to cover only personel, disciplinary, and financial matters (which is normal in most organizations). Contractual matters (such as auctions) would be openly discussed. Heritage should not be given special treatment. Also, volunteers and staff would no longer be required to sign such agreement.

    3) Every year, have the auctioneer duties rotated among recognized numismatic auction firms. For example, ANR - 2007, Superior - 2008, Stacks - 2009, Heritage - 2010, and Bowers - 2011. The playing field for the auctions needs to be fair.

    4) Push for electronic voting. The last election some members did not receive their ballots. This is a disservice to our members.

I can think of more, but what I have posted is a start.
