I never heard of the 1882 Blind Man's Nickel pattern. Has anyone else?

I never heard of the blind man's nickel pattern. Here is a link below. Does anyone know when the last one was auctioned and what the price was?

One sold at the Stack's auction of the Rothchild collection in Oct. 2003 for about $20K.
  • Very interesting, I wanna see the edge and the ridges, how high are they?
    Love them busts!

It's J-1697 in Judd if that helps anyone research.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Kranky-- I need to check my Judd book tonight. I don't remember reading about it. It's very interesting. Maybe board member Julian owned one at one point. He is the pattern god (along with Rick Kay).

There was one in the 1,100 pc. Pattern
    deal Numismatics, Ltd. purchased from
    Abe Kossoff in 1974.

Any of the listings in the Judd book for
certain weights, errors, etc, that mention
"Numismatics, Ltd." were coins that I
researched at the time, and submitted
to Kossoff for, I think, the 6th or 7th Edition.

As an aside, we took the entire Pattern Deal
to Houston for a major coin show there; we
went to Harry Bass's hotel room, and he
had brought HIS entire Pattern Collection.

He went through our coins, with a mag. glass,
very carefully, one at a time; if our coin was
nicer than his, he bought it. If his was nicer,
he passed.....one of my more interesting

Re: Fred's story...wow - how many times have there been that many patterns in one place at one time.

    I don't remember the prices from 1974 - I kept
the 2x2 flips, with Judd's notes on them, for
about 5 years, and then sold them to a dealer
    back east......

As far as getting paid from Harry Bass, I'm pretty
sure it was a check, and not a wire, but all I know
for sure was that we weren't worried about his
    payment form.......

I worked at Numismatics, Ltd., Bev. Hills, for 13.5
years, and was in charge of the Rare Coin Dept.
for about the last 10 years of that time frame,
after Fred Malone left the company.

That's the deal that had the Platinum Bust Half,
the complete 1876 Silver Pattern Dollar Set, and
TONS of neat, superb, and rare Patterns of all
    Denominations and metals....
