Interesting Mintmark.

Hey guys just wondering if anyone could tell me what's wrong with this mintmark. It is the "s" mintmark on a 1941 Washington quarter. Is it like cud or what?

It's probably just a filled die.

In a filled die there would not be any detail ,just a blank spot,no raised blob.A good filled die example would be In god we _rust. A cud happens on the rim What happened here is similar in that part of the incuse S mintmark on the die breaks off leaving a cavity which leaves a "blob" raised up on the coin. These are called blob or clog MM.They are common yet interesting. You could start a clog collection by date or MM.I enjoy finding stuff in my change like this all the time.Good training for the eye.Happy Hunting!image

    D'oh. I was confused.

    Thank you.

  • Looks like the upper part of the mintmark suffered a die chip which created a "clog" in the upper loop. It also looks like something has hit and damaged the upper serif area. It may also be possible that the hit that damaged the serif may have simply pushed the metal to the side and closed the loop of the S. Subsequent wear then smoothed the junction and hid the evidence. The only way to confirm which it is would be to find another clogged S 1941-S quarter.
