How significant is the Della Collection of quarter eagles (upcoming Heritage auction) and is MS-61 a

I got an email from Heritage announcing that the Della Collection of quarter eagles will be presented at the upcoming Long Beach show. The text of the announcement is below. I see that the set holds the coveted #1 status in the PCGS Registry, Is anyone familiar with this collection? Do the coins generally have original surfaces? I checked out some of the pictures on the Heritage site and I cannot tell. Also, I see that some of the coins are in the MS60 or MS61 grade. I always get worried when I see these grades used. I am never sure whether the coin is really an AU-58 that has been maxed to a low MS level (technically that should not happen based on the definitions, but it does seem to happen). What do you know about this set?

The Della Collection of Liberty quarter eagles, long listed on the PCGS Registry as the #1 Current Set, will be offered as a part of our September 2006 Long Beach Signature Auction. Heritage is the Official Auctioneer of the Long Beach Coin, Stamp & Collectibles Expo. The Signature Auction will be held September 13-16, 2006 at the Long Beach Convention Center, 100 South Pine Avenue, Long Beach, CA 90802.

The Della Collection contains an amazing three dozen different Mint State issues. Of the 36 coins, nine have been certified by NGC; so Della's position as the #1 leading collection is even stronger than just the PCGS Registry listing. We cannot imagine a more comprehensive Registry set for this important series. The collection has been a labor of love by the consignors - an uncle/nephew team on the West Coast - for many years, with the earliest pieces purchased some fifteen years ago.

The consignors have told us that their favorite - and most challenging - issues were the Dahlonega pieces, or perhaps it would be better to say that their Dahlonega purchases were their favorites because they were so difficult to acquire in high grade. They are selling a small portion of their holdings now in this hot market to expand in other coin areas. We are especially proud to be auctioning this magnificent collection as it continues Heritage's tradition of offering the finest Registry collections and coins.

1842-D $2.50 MS61 NGC
1847-C $2.50 MS63 PCGS
1848-C $2.50 MS61 PCGS
1850-C $2.50 MS60 PCGS
1852-C $2.50 MS61 NGC
1852-D $2.50 MS62 PCGS
1853-D $2.50 MS61 PCGS
1856-C $2.50 MS60 NGC

The consignors of the Della Collection have also consigned more than three dozen additional coins to the September Long Beach Signature Auction, including some important rarities from other series, plus a comprehensive type collection of Uncirculated U.S. currency that will also be auctioned in Long Beach.

I tend to be wary of coins graded 61 or 62 for that reason. They're often market graded technical AU-58s.

I don't see too many technical 58s market graded to 60. If it's nice enough to get market graded into an MS holder, it will usually go 61 or 62.

I had not previously heard of the Della Collection.

As for the MS-60 and MS-61, sometimes really nice super-sliders get bumped up (ie. market grading), and this might explain the grade. I have a few really nice southern gold coins in MS-61 holders. I would not pre-judge a coin by the grade on the slab.

Same here. Though I don't collect gold myself, I do look around the registry sets to marvel at the splendidness of the coins there.

Sounds like some awesome coins nonetheless.
