Grade this 1913 Type 1 Buffalo nickel

PCGS holder. Surprised the heck out of me. I'll post the grade shortly.

Hmmm. The strike makes it difficult. I'd give it a 64.

Thats a nice coin.........strike seems a bit soft, though. I'll venture it's probably higher than the 63 I am guessing.

  • I'd say 63+ also, but what's wrong with the Indian's temple? Looks like it's either damaged, or has some gunk on it.

    Hmm, I think that's a strike characteristic.

Whatever's wrong, it must not be much. Buff lovers, check this out, but don't dwell for long--it might make you wonder, what's the use.image

  • I know it's hard to grade from pics but come on... 67?!?!

I had a hammer strike Ty1 that was completely mark free that I sent a couple different times and never came back over 66.

What's that coin have that this one doesn't? Compare the hair detail near the knot and the knot itself...Liberty...definition in the buffalo's head and mane.

This one isn't struck up as fully as the first Type 1, but the toning is pretty cool.

  • 65.... they usually come sharper struck though
  • Compare it to this one 1913 MS67 Type 1 Buffalo. See any difference? imageimage

That's more like it! Yet even with that coin, check out the hair detail on the buffalo's head--it's lacking I think. This is supposed to a near-perfect coin in every respect.

    Guy,

When I read your first post I figured the coin probably graded 67 even though I would have graded it 65, 66 max. However, the coin does appear to have very nice color (blue on the reverse and shades of orange elsewhere) and the surfaces appear flawless. But the strike is below average for a 13-P Type 1.

You win some, you loose some.

Chris, I guess this would count as a win. If only it were mine.

  • I think this ANI MS67 is better than the PCGS one!
  • Hmmm... I've seen better examples in 63 holders. It definitely doesn't have the "pop" that I would expect from a 67. PCGS doesn't seem to care as much about strike as NGC. My problem is that I tend to forgive too much if the strike is solid, and I get disapointed when I get grades back.
  • So I suppose luster counts for nothing? Thats just not right.

What do you think, Mr. Bigglesworth?
