First 1921-D Morgan die pair identified by VAM number

Julian Leidman was nice enough to show me not only coin #12, but also a very impressive book put together by the owner about ½" thick on 11x17 paper regarding the history of this coin. I studied the coin with my 10x looking for little micro-cracks that could have formed when the die was hubbed and could be the start of something that evolved into one of the known 21-D VAMs, but to no avail. The die appeared to be in perfect condition and with no doubling. Closer study may reveal die polishing lines that could be used as diagnostics. The engraver misengraved the word "RELEASED," forming "REEEASED" instead, the appeared to attempt to correct it.

John, did you PROOFread your post? WTF is coin #12? If I had to hazard a guess at what you attempted to share, I would like to believe that you examined a pair of 1921 Morgan dies??????

My guess is that John is referring to a series of coins that were engraved by the mint like the one in this thread:

Correct. #12 refers to the 12th coin struck and set aside to be engraved 12 of 100. Given a microscope and more time than I wanted to spend monopolizing Julian's table, perhaps I could have found a die polishing line or two to use as diagnostics, but no cracks.

Sorry the dies didn't have some thing distinctive that jumped out and tied it to one of our known VAMs. It would have been really cool to find the "VAM-9" equivalent for the 21-D.

Tee hee. I was hoping to grab your attention with that one.

Make sure you study it when you get the chance. Map out die polishing lines. That might help.

I casually looked through some auction catalogues to find one or both of the specimens I uderbid in the past but haven't found them so far. It is possible one of them was in an early online B&M catalogue. Sure wish I had taken notes or was better organized on this one. I do recall one image was rather large, at least half a page lot listing, and might be attributable.
