8 TF VAM: Maybe, a real rip. VAM 15, anyone disagree?
New purchase, today. A pretty, mint state 1878 8 TF. Mirrors measure to eight inches. The ding on Liberty's chin looks like a major defect, that is mostly reflection from the light. Taking photos of coins this reflective is a real challenge for me, at least the full coin view. I would like input on my attribution of this coin.
So, the VAM diags: I believe this is an A1e reverse, leading to either a VAM 10 or VAM 15 designation.
On the obverse: 78 are doubled. All stars both sides are doubled. R in PLURIBUS is doubled. LIBERTY has strong, obvious shift to the left.
I come up with VAM 15. VAM 10 does not have all stars doubled, nor can I find mention of the LIBERTY diags.
Opinions? Did I make a great VAM today or did I miss the reverse attribution?
Thanks
Rick

I think I did, nice to get a winner at the flea market. If it didn't have a bag mark on the chin, it might go 64 or 65 PL. Got to love the hunt.

Yeah guess so. This feel almost as good as the 1878 VAM 44 I bought in 1991 for $8.

I did say almost, didn't I? That was the first Morgan I ever bought and I thought those things were lying around everywhere. Been look for another ever since.

<< <i>A raw one sold on eBay in February for $921. Fey's sheet has it well over a grand in that grade. >>
Thanks for the information, I will see if I can find my VAMviews.

Not sure what you mean, I have found quite a few nice VAMs at flea markets here in Florida. Mostly at permanent dealers with whom I trade regularly, a couple of them save me all of their 7/8 tf and 8 tf Morgans.

<< <i>That doubling on LIBERTY is spectacular!!
I love it with the oblique lighting, it really stands out.
