It Finally Happened!! **UPDATED**

Well I got 3 days off from work this week, so I had to get out with my new hunting partner. I've clocked in about 30 hrs with the Sovereign now, and am getting a fair grasp of what this great machine is trying to tell me.
Today I decided to go back to Goshen Memorial Park and try my luck for some old coins. This park dates to the mid 1800's but, has yet to produce a 19th century coin for me. So I headed out this morning with the full intentions of breaking that 1900 barrier , even if I had to search all day!

Well it took about 5 hrs but it happened! I was concentrating on the deep faint signals all morning and came across a nice even target response in all-metal. I then pinpointed the target and switched to discrimination, to here a good pitch coming through my headphones! I dug my plug and slid the S-1 probe in the hole and was getting a great high pitch coming through now! Down about 6-7 inches appeared a green disk.

Please be an IHC I kept saying in my mind!!! I've yet to have found one. I grasped the disk and wiped away the dirt from the face to see...

YES!!!

I was quite excited to say the least! I know it's not a huge deal for some of the great TH's around here, but for me it was a real milestone!
To make it even better I looked at the PCGS price guide to see there are two varieties for this date. The last feather on the headress points between the "C' and "A" which makes this a semi-rare Type 2 variety!

I will be heading back tomorrow morning and give it another try. I'll keep ya posted.

    (that's exactly how I use my Sov... listen to the deep whispers in all metal and then switch to disc... by the way, I've heard of guys creating their own "mod" and added the all-metal/disc switch to shaft's handle right at your thumb... sounds like a good time saver if you're handy and can do mods like that)

    Don't overlook those faint signals. I would rather have dug up a rusty nail than beat up myself over a missed opportunity. My motto is just simply: There Is Only One Way To Find Out. Dig, dig, and dig especially in old parks.

    What's funny is that he'd gotten a couple of Barber dimes before he ever dug the IHC. There are more IHC out there in the dirt than dimes of the same period.

    alot of people tend to pass up on indian unknowingly. my experience shows that they come in around junk or just lower than modern cents.

    how do i get a coin rarity guide? i've dug hundreds of indian cents. i wonder how many varieties i might have....?

    The Type 1 / Type 2 1886 varieties are well known and listed in the Redbook. Not exactly esoteric die varieties or anything.

    I usually get a signal between the screwcap and zinc penny range on IHCs. You're right- they usually read lower than a normal penny reading. Seldom have I ever dug them down as low as the pulltab range, though, although I am sure the 1859-64 copper-nickel pieces must fall down in that range somewhere (haven't found one of those yet).

    I do love that lovely green patina they get. Not as a coin dealer, but from a digger's point of view. That sort of patina is quite prized on ancient Greek and Roman bronze pieces, and of course most of the ancient bronze on the market was dug at one time or another.

    Funny how I have found several IHC with that green color, but seldom if ever have my early Wheat cents been that color. And the early Wheaties will usually read in the penny range on the meter, while the IHC fall below that. Yet Indian cents and early Wheat cents had the same composition. I always wondered why that is.

    It's an 1897 and in was in much better shape than the '86 I found yesterday till I put a slight gouge just under Liberty's nose. image Also found a 1914 wheatie and a 1928 wheatie.
    It's been a great two days of hunting and I hope to get out one more time this evening.

    Great Job. I still get pumped when I dig and Indian and I've dug about 100 of them. Keep at it there are alot of Indians in the old parks and places. The readings you will get off of Indians, vary widely.

    thats really cool that you got another one! of all the old coins to dig, i never get tired of indian cents. as the old saying goes, once you find one, many more will follow. at least it seems like that anyway.

    there have been a few sites out here in CA, where indians were as plentiful as wheaties. you may just get lucky and find a site like that.

    I can imagine how exciting it must have been to pick that green disc out of a deep hole image

    Sounds like you're really putting in some hours, and have a good feel for your new machine already.
    Also, I agree with LM, at the rate you're going there is some suction in the air already..... image

    So what's the next goal? A seated silver (or maybe you have one already?) A large cent? image

    I do have a seated silver I found while hunting a home site in a local field. It was holed and in bad shape due to all the chemicals used on the crops, but I was pumped!

    My goals this year was :
    #1 an IHC (achieved)
    #2. Buffalo nickel (still looking)
    #3. Large Barber silver...especially an O mint coin so LM will be rattled! image(not yet)

    The Sovereign is working great but I've got a lot to learn. I'm about to add a meter to the Sov. so I can ID my finds, so more learning experiances to come. image
