NewPS: 1883 Shield Nickel....need help for ID 1883/2!

Still branching out from Morgans and Peace dollars. My latest edition to my type collection. An 1883 Shield nickel. I have posted some pics using a new lense I just picked up. 105mm Macro instead of the 50mm. Is this a 1883/2? Ideas on grade?

I can't tell, but here's a link to a site that features the known varieties...link.

Check Howard Spindel's website (copywright) for the best available info on 1883/2 Shield nickels. http://www.shieldnickels.net , then select 1883_2. Howard is IMO the world-class expert on this topic, he occasionally posts here also.

Nope, not an OVD. Sorry. As for grade, the '83 comes quite a bit nicer than earlier years in the series, and the TPGs are correspondingly stricter. I'd say no higher than 63. Be sure to check out Howard Spindel's website that Blackhawk linked. It's one of the better numismatic resources on the Internet.

I'm gonna guess 64. What a great strike. I really like it!

I'd grade it a nice 64. It does'nt seem to match any of the 5 known overdates IMO, mabey you have something new. You might send Howard a pic and see what he says.

It's not one of the five known 1883/2 varieties, and I don't see anything that makes me think it's a new 83/2 discovery. What do you see that makes you think it might be an 83/2?

At least it's 1883. 99% of the purported/advertised 83/2 are really 1882 filled 2 (my website, to which you've previously been directed, shows pictures of this as well).

As for grade, looks MS to me but no better than 63. I have no clue what a grading service would give it - they are all over the map these days.

It's a nicely struck coin. 1883's often come well-struck. The spidery die cracks are typical as well and don't affect the grade.

    I'd say MS63 with a nice shot at 64.
