Ever bought a cheap coin from someone while they were under the influence?

I haven't but I have thought about giving beer away at our tables at coin shows. The cost of 1500 beers is about $1000. A few good sales would pay for it. I think though the problem is that they sell beer at many shows so they might not take kindly to someone giving it away.

Yeah...an open bar at a major coin show would be kind of interesting; however, it probably would pay off for you in the long run.

Wine might be seen in a better light. Some art galleries, spas and other luxury oriented businesses give their customers a glass of wine to "relax" them. I'm sure it helps me to make decisions, just not sure the quality of them. A little alcohol helps me feel the real "want" for something and put aside the overly-analysed nerdy intellctual arguments on whether or not I "should". Having something that I really want generally brings more pleasure than things that were just good deals or good investments.

Without the alcohol I tend to just sleep on it and if I wake up still thinking about it then I must want it bad enough to buy it. If I wake up and it's out of my mind, I don't go back. I've used this strategy mostly with art.

You know what, that's a great idea. At trade shows I attend, the larger exhibitors sometimes have free beer and/or a fancy coffee bar, soft pretzels, etc. and they are always popular. Does that $1000 price include the bartender (who I assume must be hired from the facility, which is the liquor license holder). I doubt the facility would care if you want to give it away, since you have to pay them for the beer and the person serving it.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Maybe you could covertly serve shots?

I have always thought that coin shows should be "glammed" up a bit. One trade show I went to had the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders at one booth!

Hopefully you're joking. If I found out a seller was doing that purposely they'd not get a cent from me again.

    Hey Mr. Lawyer!

If you get someone drunk and they claim you ripped them on the deal, is your purchase or sale contract voidable?

In addition to having to get a license to serve alcoholic beverages, you would also have to card everyone to make sure they are of legal age and get permission from the show organizers and owners of the convention center.

Since Aramark has essentially a monopoly over convention center food services, it would never be allowed to happen.

You have to have a license to SELL alcoholic beverages, but do you have to have one to give them away? You would still have to card people though because it IS still illegal to sell or give alcohol to a minor.

I'm really sorry you feel that way. However, not everybody is an alcoholic.

Here's a good illustration by Aesop, if you aren't familliar with it already.

A Man and his son were once going with their Donkey to market. As they were walking along by its side a countryman passed them and said: "You fools, what is a Donkey for but to ride upon?"

So the Man put the Boy on the Donkey and they went on their way. But soon they passed a group of men, one of whom said: "See that lazy youngster, he lets his father walk while he rides."

So the Man ordered his Boy to get off, and got on himself. But they hadn't gone far when they passed two women, one of whom said to the other: "Shame on that lazy lout to let his poor little son trudge along."

Well, the Man didn't know what to do, but at last he took his Boy up before him on the Donkey. By this time they had come to the town, and the passers-by began to jeer and point at them. The Man stopped and asked what they were scoffing at. The men said: "Aren't you ashamed of yourself for overloading that poor donkey of yourself and your hulking son?"

The Man and Boy got off and tried to think what to do. They thought and they thought, till at last they cut down a pole, tied the donkey's feet to it, and raised the pole and the donkey to their shoulders. They went along amid the laughter of all who met them till they came to Market Bridge, when the Donkey, getting one of his feet loose, kicked out and caused the Boy to drop his end of the pole. In the struggle the Donkey fell over the bridge, and his fore-feet being tied together he was drowned.
"That will teach you," said an old man who had followed them:

"Please all, and you will please none."

If you know me, you know that I'm better at telling it like it is than sucking up to someone. I speak what's on my mind, whether or not those around me like what I have to say.

Like I said before, not everybody has a problem with alcohol. Do not get me wrong, I have compassion for you regarding your struggles. However, I do not feel that the problems of few should dictate the lives of many. A person's problems are just that, their problems.

If I'm trying to quit smoking, should I restrict anyone who comes around me from smoking as well? After all, the smell of cigarette smoke can trigger a need for a cigarette in those who are addicted. What if the smell of cantaloupe made me want to light up a cigarette? Should our local supermarket be forced to not carry them anymore? Stress at work may make people want to drink as well which could end the sobriety of someone who has gone 3 months without a drink. Does your boss have an obligation to lighten your workload? No.

Do you get upset that casino's give away free drinks to patrons? Do you get annoyed during happy hour at a local restaurant? Both of these marketing techniques use alcohol to get people to visit more and spend more. Are they wrong for doing this? No.

If someone was higher then a kite on coke, meth (other illegal drug etc), I personally wouldn't feel bad one bit buying a coin cheap from them. However, I would be concerned that the coin was "hot". I may buy something from someone using illegal drugs but am not interested in buying potentially stolen property.
