<< <i>Where are you guys getting OC from? The card's about 32/68 l/r, 38/62 t/b. PSA 8's allow for up to 70/30. >>
That's only true sometimes. The guideline is: Centering must be approximately 65/35 to 70/30 or better on the front and 90/10 or better on the reverse.
On a card with a high contrast and relatively wide border, 65/35 is generally the max for an 8. (I know from experience. When I had my 1965 Topps set, I had a Joe Torre that was 9OC with 67/33 centering. They would not grade it an 8 because of the centering despite being with the "gray-area" of the standards.)
My guess is a 7 NQ. No way would they give you a qualifier on a 7.
I sure thought that the centering would qualify for a straight 7. I believe the corners are a definite 7. I was just wanting y'alls opinions. Thanks. Feel free to add more opinions.
I will let y'all know the grade once it is back. I also sent in a 34 Goudey Gehrig that I expect a strong 3 or 4.
Looks like on the left side of the picture there maybe some paper lose from the left of his hat down to the top of the Yankees flag white spots or is that just the scan?
Looks like a strong 6, although I have my reservations about it being trimmed.

I really don't understand some of you guys. Do you really know what an OC qualifier is???? I can show you straight PSA 8 with worse centering (70/30) all day long. Why do you think that this is anything under 8, maybe 7, centering? My guess, straight 7 unless a wrinkle.
what's with the black dots in the bleachers to the left of Mantle's head??
it looks like initials...or DH covered up....
Then again..I see Al Rosens face in my grill cheese too....
The differences in what people see is fun to watch.....the problem with the card is that "technically" it may be in the realm of a 7 or even a 8....but the overall appeal of the card is OC...just looking at it it looks OC..without breaking out the pixel counter.
But that's why some people constantly get high grades and other post about what should have been grades. But to each his own...not everyone wants PSA 8's..9's and 10's...
I'm still failing to see how this has "8" centering. 65/35 - 70/30 centering is allowed for the front. I opened this up at 6x zoom in mspaint and I get 8L and depending where you stop, either 21 or 22R. which is 74/26 LR centering. Top to bottom I get 59/41. Centering is also based on eye appeal, and I would argue this cards "eye appeal" leans more towards OC. Straight 7 centering has to be 75/25. Check out the paragraph on "the importance of eye appeal and subjectivity in grading" in the SMR.
I will admit, I too have seen cards with worse centering based on the "letter of the law" that have made it into higher holders than the centering should have allowed, but I would suggest that in most cases, those cards exhibited typical centering for the issue or exhibited very strong charcteristics in other areas, usually corners.
At any rate, good luck with it. Regardless of what it grades, you can never go wrong with a PSA graded Mantle in your collection.

The centering, although it may be within guidelines for an 8 just does not carry the same eye appeal as it would with other cards. All 4 corners appear to have some rounding, although minor, it is still there. The surface has alot of issues. I am not trying to knock down someones card, but everything added up says 5 to me.
This is why so many people get their subs back and complain about poor grades. If they put personal feelings and wishfull thinking aside and look at the card completely objectively they would understand better why their cards got the grades the did.

First appearance - nice looking card. Closer look - touched corners, some snow, looks like a small scratch. I think a 6. But still a very nice Mantle. Best of luck - and we would appreciate knowing what it grades if you submit it.
Regardless, best of luck and let us know how it turns out

I have never seen an 8 with that kind of centering. Side to side near the top it looks 30/70 at best. The corners look 6.5. The surface looks decent. Overall, I'd give the card a straight 6. I agree with those who have said no way there would be a qualifier with a 5 to 7 grade on that card. My vote = 6.
Here are some links to current auctions...note the PSA 8...similar centering...but without the other flaws.. The PSA 6 and PSA 7's are nice too....look to be sharp..and again..without the rest of the problems.
I'll stick with my previous PSA 5 vote for the card in this thread..
Sometimes scans of corners look different than the card looks in hand. I can tell you for certain that the corners are sharper than most of you are saying. I have seen many graded cards, and I feel very strongly that the corners are a STRONG 7. The only question I have about the card is the centering.
I will definitely post the grade when I get it. If I am wrong, I will admit it. I don't believe there is any chance at all that it is a 5. I am about 50/50 in saying either a 6 or 7. I believe it could go either way.
I tend to agree with 5stat about the snow and touches on the corners (even slight) holding this card back from a high grade. I think you have a strong 6 with the shot at a 7
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

This still gets me. Look at the PSA criteria for the centering - pay attention to the percentages. PSA 8 can be up to 70/30 (again, I have seen too many PSA 8 with 70/30 centering or slightly under). Where the @%!$# are people getting 6OC or 5OC from?????
I can't comment on the corners, they very well could be 5 or 7 corners, I can't really tell.
