I'm looking in coin value magizine and there is a coin called the Gobrecht Dollar. I figured we could have a discussion about this coin specifically

One of the most beautiful of American coins. One of the very few to be released into circulation in the proof format. Originals were struck in 1836, 1837 [dated 1836], 1838 and 1839.

See below for a picture of the Amon Carter 1838.

TDN, that Registry Set is only about half complete !!! I'm sure you remember the L.K. Rudolf group, and those were all silver !!! If you assembled the first ever COMPLETE set of Gobrecht dollars with patterns including copper and other metals, that would be ultra-cool !!!

I think they are great coins. I don't think they are unappreciated. I just think they are a coin the average collector, like me, can not afford to own.

I used to own 3 of the R-8's .... but I just couldn't justify the value of near $200k in my mind for fantasy pieces so I sold them. I like the regular issue dates much betterer... my set is based on the Redbook, which shows those 5 coins as the basic set.

I have no illusions about duplicating the spectacular colors of the Amon Carter 1838 with my dark specimen. I"ll settle for a smidgeon or a hint, ok, any color at all!

Rare? Yes. Beautiful? Not (IMHO). I think the pose of Lady Liberty is so unnatural, unappealing and unartistic versus a Walking Liberty Half or Saint.

The test for determine an original versus restrike is die alignment. There are four die alignments with alignment 1 and 2 being originals with the eagle flying upward, alignments 3 and for are restrikes have the eagle flying horizontal..

One of my top 3 favorite reverse designs ever.... And it looks like we are all in agreement on that fact.

A few years back, I described the background of the J-59 and J-64 copper Gobrechts to my dad, who said, " So they're not even real." Nice pieces, but that, and my concern about RB becoming BN, was enough to get me to sell!!
