What if you could buy any one coin with a budget of 1 Billion Dollars

seateddimeseateddime Posts: 6,169 ✭✭✭
At that price you can have anything you want for sale or not.

The only rule is you can never sell it and must donate it to a museum upon your death.

What are you going for?

My pick? 1873 cc seated dime less those pesky arrows

My pick (And this coin isn't currently known to exist, to the best of mine, and several other experts' knowledge) would be a true Unc 1802 Half-Dime... either that, or that SP67 1792 Half-Dime... would be a tough choice... image

I'd take the 1849 $20. Then, I'd negotiate a deal with a museum where if they give me other coins now, I'll donate the 49 upon my death.

Then, I'd sell the coins they gave me.

    Of course.

The 30 pieces of silver (shekels) that Judas Iscariot received. Slabbed and documented of course. And listed as "First Strike."

A US Coin? The 1873cc NA gem quarter (James A. Stack specimen) has always been the "seated coin" to me, even after the unique 73cc dime showed up. I'd have most of the billion left too. Would also not mine owning the Child's 1804 dollar or the Eliasberg 1913 Lib. nickel or finest known 1894-s dime. All of those have always had some romance and intrigue. KOS proof set as well. While the ex-Judd 1776 and those $50 Unions are all neat, they haven't traded in the market all that much and haven't had the fanfare.

How about the Confederate $20 gold piece used on the Hunley?
Well at least the owner feels it is priceless.

Huh ?? Steve Contursi 1794 dollar ??? Coins are pedigreed to collectors and collections, not to dealers who buy them to hype them and resell them for a profit. That coin is properly pedigreed to Col. E.H.R. Green, Will W. Neil, and Amon Carter, all great collectors who bought coins to enjoy them, and who built very notable collections.

    Best,

actually I was just thinking this morning about an 1838-O Bust Half -- I know very little about the history of this coin, were there any circulation strikes? or are the only known examples proofs?

They are classified as proofs .... although in my opinion they were only struck once and were allowed to eject upon each other ... thus in my mind they are hardly different than prooflike first strikes [not that it matters one bit].

I'd give 80% of it away like Warren Buffet did. Then I would spend 100 million building 5 to 10 YMCA in selected inner cities. Then I might buy a few coins perhaps a complete set of gold coins, all denominations. Then.....I would will that part of it to the Smithsonian to upgrade their collection.!image

The choices! Both 1913 and 1933 are prime numbers and the classic rarities for those years are both holes in this NGC Signature Set of mine.

After I die it has to go to a museum and no other collector will have the chance to have the thrill and pride of ownership? No thanks, you can keep your billion dollars and I'll leave the coins in the marketplace.

I don't think I could really buy just one coin. I would go with an original 1834 proof set in an original case. They hold a rich history of US politics and numistacists who held the sets together for the future.
