POLL: What has a lower surviving population: 1927-D or 1933 $20s?

With the ten on display in Colorado, the one in the Smithsonian, and the $7.65M one, that makes 12 known 1933 double eagles. Surely there must be more out there.

All told, what do you suppose the truly rarer coin is: the 1927-D or 1933?

I think that it is pretty much a toss up. Almost certainly less than 25 of each.

It is far more likely that there is an undiscovered hoard of 27-D's.

Edited to say that my rationale is that all of the 33s that have surfaced came from Switt. Therefore, I doubt that any coins escaped through anyone else. And we have now accounted for most if not all of the 25 coins that Switt claimed to have had. So that should be about it for the 33s. On the other hand, anything's possible with the 27-Ds.

Somewhere, probably at a baron's estate in the Alps, a mint sealed bag of 27-D's is being used as a doorstop.

The current pop of the 27-D is what about 12 or so?

We know the 33 is higher then that right now.....

When was the last 27-D found, it has to be awhile with all the pub that coin has gotten recently.....

There's only ONE 1933 Saint that's legal to own so for all intents and purposes its the rarer coin.

If the "owners" of the 10 recently revealed 33s had been successful in keeping them, then I suspect a lot more would mysteriously show up. But since the Gov is never going to give them back, your question cannot be accurately answered.

Well, in some ways I can see where you're going, but I personally don't believe the government's argument is valid beyond a reasonable doubt, so as far as I'm concerned there's far more than one.

Also there is the Smithsonian piece from the national collection. If these don't count, then the 1849 Double Eagle is unknown...

No doubt someday more of each will come to light. But like others have said, the downside in finding a pile of 27-D's is not that unrealistic. I would not be surprised if there is such a group out there right now and in the hands of someone who knows exactly what they have.

Oops...I voted the wrong way. Selected the 27-D in my haste.

Could be. The problem is figuring out how to liquidate them. You wouldn't want to put all of them out there at once, but rather a small number every few years. The problem with that approach, though, is that uncertainty about the number of pieces waiting to come out of hiding could have people afraid to place any bid.
