Poll: Have you ever checked out a numismatic book from the public library?

This thread, and my own lack of creative thought prompted this poll.

So have you checked out any coin books from the local library? image

If so, which one(s)?

I never checked one out because they had them in the reference section where you could only look at them whilr in the library, but I did look at them.

I'm not really sure how I should reply to your poll - the local town library near UConn had a copy of Breen's Encyclopedia in their reference section, I used to photocopy pages out of it but obviously they wouldn't let me check it out.

I got The Beauty and Lore of Coins, Currency, and Medals and some book written for British children that want to start out coin collecting.

I checked out a lot when I was a kid. I was enthralled with *any* numismatic works, pretty much. These days I don't see much there of much use.

I just thought of something else. Does the ANA library count? I've borrowed a few books and several video tapes from them.

I have checked some out, and I have donated some. I hope no one ended up stealing them.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

  • I've checked out 2 or 3 maybe 4, but most of ours are in the reference section also....at least all the good ones are.

Yes. I checked out the World Coin references because they are too big to own.

Our local library has Breen's Encyclopedia in the reference section and couple of very old (including a Charleton from about 30 years ago) in the circulating collection. The library in the town next door has the VAM book and the Krause World Coins book in their circulating collection.

I remember checking out books in the '80's from the public library, but nothing recent.

I work in different schools, and have looked in a few of their libraries when I had a chance. This was before I really got back into the hobby, but can remember many books from in the 40's to 70's range on coin collecting in general, and some type-specific books. There was some redbooks and similar reference guides from 30 years ago in some of them.

I remember checking the cards on some and they didn't appear to be checked out by the students in 20 years in some cases.

My kids' school has a book sale every year, may be worth calling your local school and seeing if they have an annual "Cleaning House" book sale so to speak.

Anyone pulled a "Jerry Seinfeld" and kept that numismatic book for 25 years?

I'll bet Mr. Bookman from the local library is hot on the trail with the $15,000 fine!

My library only has coin books in the reference section. It is a pretty decent selection, but to my knowledge, none are in the circulating section.

My library had a new book, Lost Gold of the Republic. The few others were beginner collectors books.

Well, Marty would be in deep trouble with Bookman for all of his coins with "pee-pee's" and "wee-wee's" on them. image

Back before I started collecting I chaecked out and read every coin book available in the circulating section of every library branch and the main library in Jefferson County Ky. Plus the ones in my school libraries, and read to ones in the reference section of the main library in downtown Louisville. Today although I tend to lookand see what they have, I no longer check anything out because my personal library puts theirs to shame. If I ever get them all back up on the shelves I'll have to see what I have in the way of duplicates and maybe make a donation.

The only good numismatic books at my public library are in the reference section; however, I have made copies of a few pages.
