StuartStuart Posts: 9,831 ✭✭✭✭✭
I am pleased to have purchased this 1878-S NGC MS-65 (2-Sided Toned) Morgan Dollar this evening at auction from a fellow forum member.

I think that she's a beauty with a strong strike for the date, and am also interested to know how you like her based upon the following original seller's auction photos ... image

Very nice...love the obverse toning, PL reverse and crisp detail.

So, where do you think she spent her days?? Would you say in a GSA bag?

Or maybe someone took care of her from her first days from the mint.

Stuart, I like this toner better than the one we previously corresponded on ... this one appears to have more color (based on the images). You can never go wrong with attractive color, especially when it is coupled with gem quality (not to mention the most market-acceptable plastic) !!!

Mikey, nice 1878-S toners ... funny how '78-S's have a certain look ... these remind me of the "booming blue monster" that I bought from you several years ago (and later sold back to you I think) ... now I just need you to find me a superb gem toned '78-S monster in a PCGS MS67 holder !!

    Best,

I especially like the way the toning 'frames' the reverse devices, giving the eagle and wreath an almost 'cameo' appearance against the background of the toning. I myself would find that kind of toning very pleasing. Better than a few cresents against a blazing white coin IMO. Congratulations.

Hi Stuart, thanks !! Anyone who is interested can see more toned Morgans at the TCCS (Toned Coin Collectors Society) message Boards here:

Toned Coin Collectors Society "Rainbow Room" Forum

Take a look at the "pair of bluberries" thread (similar to the second 1878-S you posted here), and the "Two-Sided Toners" thread further down the page (there's another nice two-sided 1878-S there), plus many other good threads with great pics. Those threads will give you a good idea of the variety of color that is out there ... of course, not every coin has to be a "monster" and you can build a nice collection without having to spend top dollar for "monsters" !!

    Best,
    Sunnywood

Stuart: The two-sided "ice-blue" 1878-S dollar is very cool. It looks like the surfaces might be semi-prooflike -- are they?

<< Stuart: The two-sided "ice-blue" 1878-S dollar is very cool. It looks like the surfaces might be semi-prooflike -- are they? >>

Mikey: Thanks for your above quoted question. In reply to your question, yes both sides of the 1878-S NGC MS-65 (2-Sided "Ice Blue" Toned) Morgan Dollar which is illustrated earlier in this thread are Semi-Prooflike with light Cameo contrast between frosty devices and lightly reflective fields, which really accentuates the cartwheel luster blasting through the light blue toning, as you rotate the coin in light.

I especially love the DMPL, PL and Semi-PL Morgans, especially when they are attractively toned on both sides!! image
