coolpix 950 trouble

i'm hoping there's a fix for some trouble i'm having with my nikon coolpix 950 and some of you can help me out. when i turn the camera from off to automatic, the camera turns on and monitor lights up normally. when i then go to manual, the camera and lcd goes dead. moving over to play, there's a couple of second delay and the monitor comes on. when i do get manual menus, etc., it'll sometimes just die while i'm using it.

is the manual mode switch burnt out, or is there a setting i turned on by accident?

sorry if this is the wrong forum for this.

think you have problems?--I have a canon that just shows diagonal lines in the viewer like some old 1950's television--guess its time for a new one

I don't know if this will help, but here is a link to a user guide online (I've only browsed the table of contents): Text

Try a different brand of memory.

I think Russ is just saying that diferent memory cards have different power characteristics. If the being used draws too much power then the Camera's Voltage Regulator might get confused and shut down.

hello larrynj......i had a NIKON Coopix 775 that I encountered issues with as well. You may want to consider
picking up a like-new one rather than paying an authorized dealer to fix. This is what i did about a year ago, because I liked the camera so much:
I sold the non-functioning camera on ebay as-is "for parts", and got around $40 bucks for it. I purchased an immaculate
like-new model on ebay for $75...Net, net, I received a working model for $35, rather than paying to have it fixed ($75-100 minimum)
from a Nikon dealer in NYC. You dont have to do this, but it did work for me. I still have the camera today, and it works mah-velously.
    Good luck!!!!

again, this is a last resort, assuming that you exhausted all opportunities to fix it on your own...... image

    For the camera, maybe? image

Both of my 950's are very sensitive to memory brand. I had all kinds of similar symptoms with both when I first got them. Switched to a different brand, no problems since.

by the way, if the 950 truly crashes and burns, you can get one for about a hundred bucks on ebay.

    Reboot it!
Pull batteries and then reload it to see if problem persists.
    It usually clears with reboot.

If you are using it on a copystand or tripod next to your PC and the USB cable is attached, try it with the cable out. My coolpix 775 (which recently died) wouldn't operate while connected via USB - only transfer images.

Which is why I use an AC adapter.

Russ, what brand of memory worked best for your 950? I'm surprised at the problems, Nikon is usually a reliable brand.

thanks for the suggestions everyone. i think i found a fix for the problem. most bigger items i always just give it a good smack and it behaves for awhile, the camera, i tried just jiggling the on/off switch when it conks out, and it worked. the monitor comes right back on. i'm using an ac adaptor and a sandisk memory card, so i think the switch has just been overused. i bought it on e-bay, used, so i shouldn't be surprised.

i took my first coin pics yesterday, got them nice and sharp, next thing is work out the proper lighting. i'll share when i get the process a little more refined. thanks to russ who helped me out when i first got the camera and for his advice here.
