Is this an 8/7 Morgan?

Or an unfortunate series of blemishes?

Hard to tell--could you show the whole coin-both sides? and perhaps the area a little above the 8 also? It appears it may be. If you show the whole coin-a VAM expert may be able to tell right away...(not me though) Bobimage

I was just grasping at straws. It is the second 8 from an 1878 cc. Is it possible? I don't know. Is it likely I'm guessing no.

There were no 1877 dies to overdate. I would say just a tiny bit of random damage.

I think you would see more detail on the upper right outside. A hardness test punch was customarily the 8, but not always. (There are MPDs with a 7 in the denticles.) It is not outside the realm of possibilities.

I have an 1886 into Leroy right now that appears to be a repunched date over a mistake 1868. I suppose 1878 could be mistakenly 1887 or 1877 and corrected. These are always worth looking for.
