Forum Coin Business Transaction References -- Question ??

StuartStuart Posts: 9,831 ✭✭✭✭✭
My question to the forum is whether or not it would be appropriate (and if so, on which forum?) to ask other forum members to post their comments about their level of satisfaction for coin business transactions that they have had with a specific seller, such as we sometimes informally do on their BS&T threads.

The reason that I am asking is to determine if there is an appropriate way (within forum rules and proper etiquette) to have satisfied customers post their level of confidence in their business dealings, as well as their satisfaction with the coins that they have received during transactions, to be used as business references for other forum members considering making a purchase, but who have not yet done business with someone.

I know that I am being a bit cryptic, but this is actually meant to be a practical, and not so much a hypothetical thread. Thanks in advance for your thoughts and feedback on this. image

Some forum members find it distasteful to compliment sellers here. I find it very useful. We talk about who the bad guys are everyday. From a practical standpoint, it is important to know who the good guys are, too.

    Not rude IMO.

Just an open ask for references.

The only people that should be worried are bad sellers anyway, and quit frankly...I could care less if a bad seller were "outed"

I'm all for complimenting people who I've had quality experiences with.

Too many times we only hear about the "shady characters." It's time
to make some noise with good news and positive comments for those who are
    people of integrity.

I think that it is a great idea. Or, we could have eBay-like feedback for transactions on the BST forum that were posted next to your icon. They do it on the audiophile site audiogon.com.

I don't see anything wrong with asking about experiences with board members. People ask about ebay sellers all the time.

If I contact a member about a coin on the BST board, I usually include a list of board members I've done business with in the past so the member can contact them for a reference if desired.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Stuart...interesting question and well presented. First, it is poor judgement to post information critical of an individual or company in a public forum because it may harm those malaigned and could result in an actionable cause aka lawsuit. Critizing people in public is also boorish. On the other hand, it seems most appropriate to recognize good things or good people in a public forum. So, it is probably improper to harm individuals in public but it is good form to praise individuals or actions that deserve recognition.

It is good to have references to do business and with that in mind, it is personal business (a private transaction between individuals), so positive or negative information on a buyer or seller is a critical part of doing private transactions. Just as you would not post your personal references in a public forum, you probably should not post negative information about an individual in a public forum. That kind of feedback/information is best left for IM's and that is the proper venue for personal opinions and private information. This is evidenced by long running threads we have witnessed previously here that just go on forever with nothing good coming from them and nothing being resolved and resulting in people being harmed in public...not good.

Now on the other hand, spammers, trolls, and the other misdirected individuals have been and will be dealt with by the appropriate nukers here. Good question and interesting topic. JMHO
