Detroit VFW Show Report (with Dcam and Commem pics)

Normally I skip this monthly show during the summer months because it is usually slow and it tends to be the same material on display. But I went on Sunday and to my surprise, I picked up a couple of gems - shown below.

I got the chance to sit behind a dealer's table and watch the action (about 40 tables total). Despite the great weather, there were lots of customers. A fair amount of buying and selling in silver and gold. Halves and quarters both raw and slabbed appeared to be popular. The dealer I sat with did very well for the time I was there. Overall it was very busy well into the afternoon.

I was lucky to snag the following two items. The Franklin is pretty rare in PCGS dcam and I was happy to work out a deal on it. Here are some quick pics - (I apologize in advance for the quality of the pics):

And I also found this Stone Mountain Dedication Day envelope dated May 9, 1970. The commem grades 64+ IMO. I've never seen one of these before and the back indicates that only 100 were made. Put together for the official dedication after a very long process (the commem was issued in 1925). Does anyone have any additional information on this piece?

Great pick ups Conrad. I like them both.

The Stone Mountain envelope is not something you would run across every day and is really a neat piece of history spanning 45 years.

Of course you do not find DCAM 1959 Halves everyday either. From the pic, the obverse frost does not look as intense and uniform as the reverse frost. In your opinion is the coin graded correctly or is the DCAM designation a gift? Also it looks like a spot has developed on the left side of the coin in the field. Is there a spot or is it just a mark on the slab? Did the coin list and sell for anywhere close to what a 66 DCAM 59 is valued at in the PCGS price guide? Finally, do you have any interest in selling it. If so, please PM to discuss.

    Thanks Kevin
The frost on the obverse is actually stronger than on the reverse. I just didn't get the angle quite right while in a hurry to snap a few photos. You are correct, there is a small milk spot on the reverse by the CA in America, but the photo makes it look far worse than it really is. Other than that spot, there is not much else to dislike.

As far as grade is concerned, it is very very similar to the PCGS PR65 Dcam piece I bought from another board memeber. I do think it is graded correctly, but it is difficult to find any 1959 with monster frost on both sides like some of the other years.

For the moment, the '59 Franklins I have accumulated are resting peacefully in the safe deposit box. As you stated, they are extremely hard to find.

Conrad, how many 59 CAM or DCAM Frankies do you have that are hanging out with one another? However many there are, you have an exclusive little club going on.

I got lucky and found a 1959 half in an original proof set that had hazed over and looked ugly at first glance. I took a closer look and saw it looked nice under the haze. After removing the haze a CAM surfaced. The reverse frost makes the CAM designation, but the obverse frost is a tad bit lighter and I do not know if it would get the designation. Still looks good thought and at the low price I paid for it, it looks even better.

I saw a PCGS PF67CAM at Santa Clara a few years ago. Very nice coin, however the dealer was asking over $1,000 for it. The next show it was still there and the price had dropped to about $800. I still refused to pull the trigger cuz............ I just could not pull it.

Let's just say that I am hoarding nice 59 proof Frankies the way Russ is hoarding the 67 proof Kennedy Birthmark Die variety. image

Still looking for some feedback from the commem collectors on the Dedication Day item.

Conrad, you and Russ should compare notes on your respective hunts and have a race to see who gets to 100 coins first (LOL).
