Got me a giclee made of a coin. (big pics)
I contacted julio after he introduced the process of printing pictures on canvas with a fancy ink-jet printer. I sent him a high-res image (2300 X 2300) of an indian cent to see how it would come out. Below are the results. It has great detail. The color is pretty close, a little dark and a little shy on yellow. It's quite nice for a first try at a coin. Sounds like it can take some tweaking to get everything set right when they do this process for fine art. Good job Julio.

So when are you and julio putting together a catalog? Awesome coins, awesome photos, perhaps with a choice of framing and maybe even a tastefully small plaque describing said coin and a bit of its history?
Count me in.

I'd hang them on my wall, but what if Consuela sees them?
Seriously, i've never seen one of these before - are they durable? For instance could you sew this giclee on the back of a denim jacket or similar application or are they too fragile and pretty much destined for art?
PCGS should see the growth potential and start grading and slabbing/framing giclees!
Very cool indeed.

I don't know if you could sew them on a jacket, and that MIGHT step across the line into true geekdom, but if you could I bet Russ would want one with a Gold Buffalo on it.
I'd damn sure like to have a few on my walls. Possibilities are endless. If a person was a decent photographer, he could send in his own pics. Or send his coins in to be photographed. Can't believe someone hasn't done this already!

OMG ... is that really Russ???
It looks to be fairly stiff with fairly thick canvas and a very glossy finish so I don't think that it would wear well.
Might have to ask julio about that.
I would never try to wear a Giclee as the canvas we use does not like water. It's also sealed with an acrylic sealer that would not appreciate being bent.
Giclees have only been around since 1989, so as to how long they will last is anyones guess. Epson and others have done lab test that say they should last 99 years with proper care. Oh yeay, that is one heck of a pic. of a Giclee that Mark took. Like all the rest I am anxiously awaiting his forthcoming book. jws
Julio,
Have you tried a monitor spyder? I hear they work really well.

How large can you print while maintaining decent detail?
I want one.
Did I mention I want one?

What is a giclee made of a coin? English translation. I always wondered why we called the giclees, giclees, and it was explained to me like this. Well it's really the difference between underwear and lingerie. You call it lingerie because you can charge more. Made sense.
A giclee is really no differnent than what you do at home when you print a color picture except we use canvas and special ultrachrome ink.
How large can you print with decent detail? That's a great question. There is no doubt that the bigger you go you do loose detail. That's just a fact. Bearing that in mind we have taken a 1 1/4 x 1 1/2" photo taken at Coney island in one of those photo booths and made a 11 x 14 with no discernible loss in quality. The pic. was taken when you could still get it done for a quarter. Joey tells me has done a 30 x 40 for the lady and it looks great. Don't you just love photoshop. It really boils down to how sharp the pic. is under magnification as to how far you can go without the aid of photoshop tricks.
Monitor spyder? No I did not even know such an animal existed. I love neat tec. stuff so I will definitely Google it and check around and see if I can find someone who uses one and get their opinion.

Yes, a 10" x 10" indian head on a jacket might cross over into geekdom, maybe for a state quarter unveiling ceremony they could do something like that, but for everyday use - I'm leaning towards geek too. I was just wondering if the material was stiff/durable more like an iron-on transfer or patch type of material and if the ink was permanant enough to withstand wear/washing, etc. Sound like no, but that's ok.
Julio - let's say I have an 8x10 family picture and want to make it into a 11x13 giclee - roughly what would it cost?
We have a few designjet plotters and some 7-ink printers in our print shop at work, but not sure any of them could print on canvas. Who knows, if they catch on, there could be a machine in Wal-Mart to bring your pictures in on memory stick/CD and the machine could giclee you while you wait.
I think if mgoodm3 had cropped the giclee of the coin so we couldn't see the texture on the outer area, and said grade the IH, chances are without super inspection, we would have thought we were looking at a straight coin picture. Great work!!

It would need to be a nice embroidered emblem. Big one on the back, little one on the front maybe?
I've got a friend whose mom works part time for a shop that does that....
