Gold Dime

About 15 years ago I received 2 Gold Dimes in the mail and I was wondering if anyone could tell me if there is a way of telling if they are solid Gold or just plated. Being that they are dimes they are not very heavy so other than weight is there another way of testing? I know this is probably a dumb question, but is there any chance they may be worth more than 10 cents. They were shipped in little baggies and I have not opened them, so they are in perfect condition.
They are a (1985 P) and (1987 D). Thank you for your help.
One more question, is there any other place besides a bank where someone can get Half Dollars? I was having godd luck getting Half Dollars from my bank, but I cleaned them out. I started making the rounds and went to 6 banks in one morning and they all said they had none, I did not believe all of them because I got some strange looks when I asked for Half Dollar rolls even when I explained why.

They are more than likely gold plated, if so they are only worth a dime each. You can tell by weighing them. A regular dime should weigh 2.27 grams.

I guess it is possible that somebody would pay 11 centsimage

  • Weigh them (or just pick them up), if they're solid gold, they will be heavier.
    I listen to your voice like it was music, [ y o u ' r e ] the song I want to know.

I'd give you the world, just because...

Speak to me of loved ones, favorite places and things, loves lost and gained, tears shed for joy and sorrow, of when I see the sparkle in your eye ...
and the blackness when the dream dies, of lovers, fools, adventurers and kings while I sip my wine and contemplate the Chi.
