When will eBay's arrogance end?

EBay put Checkout on a long list of payment services not permitted, meaning eBay sellers cannot market it as an option.

Checkout is Google's answer to Paypal.

How can they tell sellers how to get paid?

It won't end unless a serious, well-capitalized competitor can knock it off its high horse as the only real game in town.

Ebay owns Paypal and they [Ebay] apparently according to the story forbid sellers from using the [Google] service.

Can't wait for this to get challenged and I will be signing up for Checkout.
  • THAT TOTALLY SUCKS! ... With my first major sell recently on Ebay....Ebay & Paypal took more than double my profits (65%)

Does that give you any idea what Ebay is doing to sellers???? image

ebay's bullcrap is one reason Legend decided to start an auction site. They've lost me as a customer as well since I'm tired of looking at dozens of fake trade dollars for every real one listed.

I don't know what the big fuss is about with pay pal.....
As a buyer I use it with e-bay and teletrade and other retailers who accept it..I switch to the credit card payment
    and it proccesses automatically......no problem.....
I don't sell any coins yet .....so maybe it's the fees they are charging the sellers. (you guys').....image

It's all about the availability of viable alternatives. PayPal is an excellent service, but without real competition in the marketplace they can pretty much do whatever they please to their membership.

i will say this again and again, ebay is stupid for making
their website less user friendly. it is a sign of them becoming
to full of themselves and believing they are invincible.

gosh, i love how time will change that. rest assured.

    "......stamps, (prohibited payment method.)

ebay does not allow sellers to accept stamps as payment.
That one is rich. I guess they think if someone gets paid in
stamps, they will have no cash to pay feeBay.

    ////////////////////////////////////////////

"........What do you suppose would happen if Google decided
to get serious about unseating Ebay?"

I suspect it is an impossible task. Sort of like trying to build
an alternative to the InterState Highway System.

google could spend hundreds of millions and still lose. With
ebay claiming 200,000,000 "registered users," the relative
few complainers make ebay's infrastructure "solid-forever."
Even if 1,000,000 people switched, ebay would still have
    99.5% Positive Feedback.

They are an evil outfit, but consumers like 'em. I like them too,
but I want them to put an end to the tens-of-thousands of
fraudulent auctions that are on their site every week. They
could easily do it, but their profits would temporarily slip.

I find ebay's fees acceptable. But, PayPal does not really offer
any meaningful protection to sellers; they say that is going to
change by the middle of this month.

google checkout is "not ideally suited" to work on ebay. It is
more like a modified merchant bank, with software designed
to place a "shopping cart" on free-standing websites.

google may yet come out with something to compete with PayPal,
but checkout really was never designed to do that; the media
    wrongly assumed that it was.

ebay will probably prevail against the restraint of trade allegations
that google is likely to make. The irony is that they will defend the
charge by saying that they "are concerned for the financial safety
of people using their venue, and cannot allow potentially unsafe
    transactions to occur."

  • I believe eBay buyer's will be able to use Google's Checkout to pay for winning auctions. However, the transfer will have to take place off of eBay's web site. It would effectively be the same as sending money to someone now using PayPal for a non-eBay purchase. Where there's a will there's a Way !!!

    Excerpt from Linky:

"Google Checkout lacks a track record as a secure and reliable consumer payment service, Ebay spokesperson Catherine England told vnunet.com.

    [...]

Google Checkout will likely be added as an approved payment service once it has established a track record, England added. She was unable to say when that could be the case. The e-commerce website plans to continue monitoring the service and will listen to feed back from its users."

If this is the case, I wonder when eBay will prohibit the use of PayPal.image

There is certainly "a way." I just do not think there is "a will"
on the part of buyers. Most buyers like PayPal; why would they
not? PayPal protects honest buyers, and enables dishonest
    buyers.

Also, in the way of "the way," is the fact that ebay will be
searching listings for refs to "google checkout." When found,
the listings will be cancelled, and the listing fees may be
    "retained."

    ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Their seller protection looks a tiny bit stronger than PayPal.
Their buyer protection is the same as any merchant processor.
Their entire scheme is very much like a traditional merchant
clearing op, and the credit card issuers are the "cops."

Some folks may not know this: MANY times in a traditional
cc transaction, outside of PayPal, the merchant prevails
in "chargeback" disputes. (PayPal claims they are going
    to better protect sellers............"soon.")

I think this was stated ina round-about way, but instead of sending a check (in other words providing payment off of ebay), couldn't the buyer send payment to the seller directly via google? The seller still has to pay fees related to the sale. ebay just doesn't get the PayPal fees just like they wouldn't with cash payment, check, money order, wire transfer, or any other off ebay payment method.

New York Times, June 22, 2007: eBay announced today that ALL sellers on THEIR site can ONLY accept THEIR proprietary payment progam, PayPal.

    Unrelated stories,

Wall Street Journal, June 23, 2008: NASDAQ announced today that it will consider delisting eBay citing an apparent appalling lack of general acceptance of it's product. Googles shares closed at $797.38, capping a 6 month runup after starting a competing online auction venue.

Barrons, July, 6, 2008: The Fed again raised interst rates for the 27th consecutive time but this time cited the abundance of new wealth from the numerous investors that have shorted eBay over the last 3 years.

  • Another I-hate-eBay thread. Nobody's holding a gun to anyone's head. It's their website, they can (and do) make whatever silly rules they want. If yall hate it so much, quit using it. There are other venues, and as eBay gets sillier, there will be more. That's how the free market works!

In fact... Yes. Quit bidding on coins on eBay. Please. image
  • so, whats to stop someone from using google checkout to complete the transaction? people do paypal transactions outside of ebay all the time. how people choose to pay is none of ebays business, whether it be check, cash, paypal, chickens or google. The bastiges just want their fees lol. It pains me to pay them twice via Ebay fees and paypal fees....especially considering how high they have become. Any breakdown on the google fees, just curious how they would compare.

I think that there might be genuine restraint of trade issues with eBay's plan that Google has the money & motivation to take all the way up to the supreme court if necessary.
  • RussRuss Posts: 48,514 ✭✭✭
PayPal has one very real advantage over Google Checkout from an ease of use standpoint. With PayPal, the sell side and buy side is all handled from a single interface. With Google Checkout, one has to access two different areas.

No, I am not confusing. I don't have the numbers in front of me at work, but I know that they don't take 65% of my profits. Of course, the mint stuff that I sell for 100% profit because crazy people will pay it makes my profits pretty high. If someone is only making $1.00 profit (not even worth selling on eBay if so) then I could seen OVER 65% of the profits going to PayPal and eBay. I've gotten pretty good over the years at knowing what will earn ME the highest profits and I stick to selling that.

Profit is part of Gross. Profit is not net. Net is what you paid for the item. If I paid $10.00 and sell for $15.00, $5.00 is my profit, $10.00 is my net and $15.00 is my gross. For that item, eBay and PayPal will take a percentage of my gross. That will be 5.25% to eBay for Final Value Fee which is $.79, which is 16% of the profit. Say the buyer then uses PayPal to pay, PayPal takes 2.9% + $0.30 = $0.74, which is 15% of the profit. So, the amount taken all together is 31%. Far from the 65% the OP mentioned. Perhaps he was just estimating and got it wrong. I just think he probably didn't make much profit and should have sold at a higher price.

I don't even fool with auctions anymore. I put a BIN price up there and usually sell it within a few days. I've lost too much money on auctions where the fees DID equal or exceed my profits.

I expect Google Checkout will do just fine on its own. An ever growing humongous amount of commerce is initiated through Google, and they just want a piece of that action. Seems far. But since Google Checkout lacks seamless integration within eBay, it will fail as a legit competitor to PayPal (at least on eBay). Since PayPal is free for buyers, buyers will continue to choose it as the payment service of choice.

I also believe Google will launch an auction site at some time in the future. Deep pockets or not, I expect it will experience the same success as Yahoo! Auctions.

If you wind up with $90 instead of $100 on a coin you bought for $80, they have taken 50% of your profit even though they've taken only 10% of revenue.

If eBay and PayPal fees are only taking 5-10% of your profit, then you have one helluva margin.

Huh? Profit and net are the same thing. Profit is what is leftover after paying all expenses. Net is not what you paid for an item. What you paid for an item is COG or Cost Of Goods. For eBay to only be taking 5-10% of your "profits" as you stated, your COG would have to be right around zero.
