Hey guys, MooseDog's orig post included a statement about how this guy doesn't even know his stuff got taken....his Mom is trying to replace his WHOLE COLLECTION! This is a chick on a mission. The sad and ironic twist will occur someday when we find out he didn't give a crap and was gonna donate all of it anyway (hope not). ITZ
Agree completely. I was just pointing out that it would be rare for a kid his age to collect will clark.

<< <i>Every time I'm feeling blue I just think about how a GST tax would improve my outlook. >>
That's the worst insult you can come up with for Canadians? Boo, I'm disappointed. >>
No, actually, I could probably do much better.
But what's the point? The GST tax IMO is all the insult you need, and anyway I happen to like Canadians. My best friend lives in New Brunswick, and the group of guys he rolls with up there are some of the nicest, most sincere fellas you could ever hope to meet. I've also had fantastic experiences with Canadians from points ranging from Toronto to Vancouver to Smithers, BC. It's a great country, and its citizens have a lot to be proud of. Hell, I've actually considered moving to Canada, since the social mores and political climate are more in line with my own (Alberta excepted) and because the tax laws would benefit me enormously. Any country that can actually get people out to vote for the NDP is a place I'd like to spend more time.
But one thing I don't respond positively to is any kind of holier than thou crap from our friendly neighbors to the North, and believe me when I say there are plenty of you who aren't afraid to cop that attitude. You just cannot compare the economic and social dynamics between an ethnically mixed country of 300,000,000 and a country with a fairly homogeneously population (Toronto excepted) of 40,000,000.
Absolutely. But there's a difference between a state sales tax, which goes directly to the state, and national sales tax, which ends up in the federal coffers. Also, there are goods (like groceries) which are excluded in most state sales taxes.
Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Canada also has provincial and, in some cases, city sales taxes in addition to the GST.
I laugh everytime someone brings up Karma when it relates to baseball cards. Yes, I feel that Karma will catch up to the folks who kill too many people in their lifetime or commit other very bad crimes. However, someone not believing a lie from a lady regarding stolen cards or a seller not refunding a card because the buyer claims it is trimmed (especially when the buyer may be quilty of switching the cards himself) is insane with regards to Karma! Just my opinion as usual. Rich

I think we agree that your opinion is just that your opinion....And I do respect your right to have it. We all know what we are getting when we read what you write but sometimes Rich, I swear I just have to wonder if we will be reading about you in the newspapers that you are holding the twin cities hostage for some reason!
mccard: Exactly, I'm entitled to my opinion just like you are entitled to yours. However, it kills me how the easy going people only learn after they get burned over and over. What I typically do in life is take notes on how others got burned and do what I can to prevent it from happening to me. The bottom line is.....Don't trust anyone besides family, do what you need to do in order to protect yourself, and always treat people the way they treat you. Later dude. Rich
Rich, advocating distrust anyone outside your immediate family and living in seclusion could be construed by some as "over the top." If that's how you've arranged your life, fine, it works for you. However, I've found that one's philosophy of life will be proven to be correct, no matter what it is. If you live a life based on mistrust and caution, sooner or later you will find yourself in situations where you are isolated and can't find help when you need it. Live a life of optimism and cooperation, and you'll find yourself with lots more opportunities in life. Not that it's "karma" or anything like that, but pure mathematics and and understanding of human nature. Most people tend to be a mirror of what they see. Friendly when greeted with friendliness, angry when confronted with anger, mistrustful when treated with mistrust. If you meet 100 peple and treat them all kindly and openly, chances are you will have close to 100 new positive acquaintances, and maybe a couple new good friends. True, a couple of those 100 could try to take advantage of me in some way, but that would be up to me to decide if they succeeded. Personally, my "immediate family" consists of 2 people, one of whom lives halfway across the country. If I lived like you, I'd be miserable. However, my own personal circumstance notwithstanding, I find it's simply easier to go through life with my glass half full. That way you have fewer people to keep track of on your enemies list, and you expend less energy without having to keep your eyes on everyone. But while I am generally trusting, neither am I taken advantage of because I take elementary precautions when I put something at risk. You just have to use your head. I don't invite strangers into my house, I lock my doors and I always use delivery confirmation. I'm inclined to contribute something to this woman, something that otherwise would sit in a box in my closet another 10 without seeing the light of day. While this woman in question may indeed be the new Henry Gondorf, or maybe the new Ron Popeil basing her empire on retired semistar cards, in either case the cost is low, and the benefit, though invisible and quite nearly valueless to me, could be worth something to someone else. That's an advantage I'm willing to give someone.

Very eloquent, thanks helionaut, you are right on the money!!
For the record, I had another conversation with the lady and and now 100% positive her story is legit. I think Itzagoner has the situation pretty much nailed. She is trying to buy back as much of the stuff as she can remember he had before she tells him about the theft...yes, that is right...she still hasn't told him.
Guys, the grand debate that we've had in this thread, while entertaining to say the least, bottom line is this is just a mom being a mom.
RichG and the others who shouted SCAM, no disrespect intended, but you were 100% wrong on this. Not to say the next time you won't be dead on but really, anyone who wants to scam anyone out of Clark cards is probably doing us a favor at this point. Don't get me wrong, I too am a big Thrill fan and proudly own a full game worn uniform set - jersey, pants, cap, shoes, and batting gloves. But all those Clark cards I had lying around weren't really doing much for me and I am happy they will have a good home.
She gave me her permission to give those who wanted to help out her address, so I have just finished sending PMs to all you guys who volunteered Clark stuff. You'll be sending directly to her. If anyone else wants to contribute PM me or post here and I'll forward the info.
OMG- you mean my will clark collection has been stolen? My mom hasnt said anything!
just kidding

Moose: Since you're 100% sure that this lady isn't trying to scam you, I'll move on to my second reason as to why I would not help this lady out if I was you........She tried to lowball you. Some people believe in ignoring people who try to lowball them (I'm not good at that), however I would think most people would not give cards away to a person who tried to initially lowball them. Once again, I'm not saying what you did was wrong.....All I'm saying is that I would have handled things differently if I was you. Rich
Im a bigtime Clark collector. Have been since I was a wee lad and saw him hit a home run off of Nolan Ryan on TV. One of the first games I remember watching.

<< <i>hi.. could you define lowballing you.. that might help me understand this.. do you mean she made you an offer? >>
MTF: Check the whole thread if you have an hour or two....The lady originally tried to low-ball MooseDog with a Best Offer on an eBay item. That's how he met her......Rich: I agree with you specifically on one point. If someone came to me an tried to insult me with a so-called low-ball offer on an item I knew was valuable, I'd tell 'em to take a hike. I'd expect anyone educated to do the same to me. What we're discussing here is charitability(is that a word?). A person in need asked for help. This person feared having to make a great expenditure in order to solve what seems like an unsolvable problem. This woman is acting out of fear! She loves her son so much, she dreads having to explain what happened. She is gonna try to replace every little toy he had, every card. Im-freekin'-possible! She is worthy of at least our respect, and definitely worthy of assistance. She is only trying to this with the best intentions and the least amount of cash outlay. This is NOT low-balling. Christ, she's probably never even been in a Card Store before, and truth be known, any of us could take advantage of her, if only to help her solve her problem. Thank goodness there are some stand-up people on the Board! Good KARMA to all of you!!!!!!!!!!!
A lowball offer is one that is way lower than the the average ebay selling price for the item in question. Rich
Edit: Before I submit an offer to a seller, I do some homework regarding average selling prices. This lady should have done the same thing or at best been told by the person she lowballed to do so in the future. Instead, this person gave her free cards. Once again, that is fine....however, I would not have given her squat! As far as her doing what is best for her kid........Well, I'm trying to do what is best for me, and getting insulted with a lowball offer would not make me happy. Rich
I myself have lowballed and been lowballed and it never made either party upset. That I know. You never know the financial or sentimental investment someone has in a item. Since she is not a collector she does not know the current market value and it is probally not worth her time to research it. Just ask and a simple yes or no will suffice. There is a million other items she can make offers on. Many sellers do accept offers on ebay when a auction has closed as the listing fees were spent and if it has already been listed twice why try again and risk loosing fees. I wish some people lowballed me sometimes because I have too much junk. Unless of course the item is of significant value.
I am not looking to argue with anyone on this. Do what you want. I really doubt our opinions will sway anyone to change. Why do we bother. Look, now I'm crying.
My wife works in the criminal justice profession. She has what she believes to be a "healthy" level of distrust of people. I, on the other hand, believe that 9X% of people are good and honest people. She will often tell me that I am living in my own naive little world. I agree with her, saying that it is a much better world to live in than her cynical world.
I am not interesting in arguing with anybody. We all choose how we view the world, whom we trust, and whom we distrust. I respect each individual's right to their own viewpoint on this issue. But I am very comfortable living in my naive, trusting world. And most people I come in contact with seem to be enjoying life as well.

Agreed. Life becomes exponentially more bearable once you quit fretting over the possibility of getting scammed.
I still would not be suprised if this was a scam (I don't trust people outside my immediate family), and even if it's not.......No way in heck would I send free cards to a person who attempted to lowball me. Rich
i received an e-mail from Kathleen, the future "Queen of Cards", thanking me for the 4 Will Clark cards i sent her recently....don't think she mentioned anything about a mansion or a yacht
rich, i truly feel sorry for you. i don't detest you nor am i angry with you, no i pity a person who lives in a country that is so abundant with opportunities that you still don't have the ability to share.
you could live in a place where their is civil war, rampant disease or famine. or you could reside in north korea or cuba with a total dictatorship. how about an average guy in iraq who cannot go to a market without being afraid of getting it from a car bomb or homicide bomber.
every time we buy something on ebay we take a small chance that the guy on the other end is a thief.
allow me to share a story. i started a conversation with a guy on ebay who lived 1500 miles from me. we were both chasing the same set. then last december mastronet has their auction and i was too cheap to spring for the $75 to join so i had him bid on a card for me. it was over $500 and i won. i sent him the money. suddenly a month later he was gone from ebay. he sent me a note that he was having financial problems with his business, two months later i got a note that his wife had breast cancer. (still no card sent to me).
i guess i am a big chump because i always believed he would send me the card. the one day in june i got a package with the card. i had no communication with him and he did the right thing after his life got in order.
life is too short to be paranoid of my fellow man. are their scammers-of course and no one wants to be taken advantage of. if anyone feels that the situation is a scam by all means avoid. that certainly doesn't mean everything is a scam.

Using that same logic. Why should I trust you. Why should I believe anything you say. Why should I take any stock in your opinion?
Why would anyone trust you in your job? How do I know you will fulfill your mission without screwing up?
Trust is all we have. There's a difference, IMO, between being cautious and just plain negative.
Drew is taking 27$ from us and could walk. Why did I send the money? Trust.
I believe in him. If he walks? I'm out 27$. That doesn't change "me." I'm still who I am. "He" would be the one with the greater loss IMO.
I apologize for bringing this up but come on...trust is one of the hallmarks of our society.

Great story czar! I sent a boardmember money - and it was quite a bit - knowing that it would be a long time before I would see it - perhaps if ever.
I received the money back a while later.
The "act" of giving is the reward for us - what happens after that is out of our hands.
<< <i>Update: I sent half a dozen cards (or so...they're the only duplicates I had with me) and got this letter in response.

Nice card Drew
I think it's nice she took the time to write.
Over a year ago, I sent a boy a Jeter auto card and some other stuff - I never heard back from his family - whether he got the stuff or not. I felt a bit bad but I sent it in good faith and that's good enough for me. I'ld do it again.
czar: As you said, one day we will meet are maker. I firmly believe that as long as I try my best to stay out of trouble on this earth that I'll be ok. However, even though I'm not out to start trouble, I'll never back down from it if it happens to find me. The bottom line in this case is that the lady tried to lowball the buyer and the buyer turns around and sends her some cards for free. No way in heck am I going to do something good for someone who tried to screw me. As far as strangers go, I've been screwed by them way more times than been helped by them. As far as I'm concered as long as the stangers stay away from me and my family, I'll leave them alone.
Stone: Since I'm not related to you, I don't expect you to trust me. As far as my job, people are going to have to trust me or someone else in my profession because they can't do it by themself (just like I trust my doctor in a professional manner, but I would not trust him in other especially personal issues). Rich
My Uncle in visting from Chicago took a ride with me to my pharmacy (I had to pick something up). Since the store and pharmacy were closed, when we entered I purposely left the lights off as not to attract attention from possible customers/patients. As I was leaving there was a young lady standing on the outside who apparently walked to the pharmacy and wanted to either buy something from the store or get a prescription filled from the pharmacy (Not only am I the store manager, but also the pharmacy manager as well, so I could have done anything I wanted with regards to letting this young lady in the store). However, No way in heck was I going to open up the store on the 4th of July to fill prescriptions. Oddly enough, an old lady pulled up in a car and offered the young lady a ride to a pharmacy that was open today. To my suprise, the young lady go into the car with the old lady. It was obvious that these people didn't know each other (the young lady was Spanish and could barely speak English and the old lady was caucasian and could not speak Spanish). My Unlce looked at me and said......I can't believe that Spanish lady jumped into that car without even knowing the lady driving the car! People are odd around here! Rich

Rich, you're awesome!!!
Your pointless story was very illuminating, but probably not in the way it was intended.
Rich, what in the heck does that story have to do with anything. The old lady was offering assistance, and the both of them are odd? It is about being nice, and willing to help others. If you saw a woman on the side of the road in the rain w/ a flat tire, I guess you would just drive past, while splashing water on her. Dude, you really need to lighten up a little. I am surprised that you have any friends w/ your attitude towards others.
Zup: The point of the story was 1)I can't believe someone would accept a ride (unless it was an emergency, and it didn't appear that in this instance that it was) from a total stranger.
2)I'm not about to go out of my way and open up the store unless the lady was willing to pay extra for after hour service. I've learned that 9 times out 10 that if you give a stranger an inch, they will attempt to get a mile. On the other hand, if this person was an established customer/patient I might have considered it.
JMB: I would like to consider myself a very careful person. However, yes....sometimes I am paranoid. As far as how many friends I have.....I have a few outside my employees, but as my old man taught me growing up in Chicago......"It's ok to have a few friends, but never allow yourself to get to close to them as you never know when they will turn on you". Rich

I guess I should follow the old sage advice I heard years ago...If i dont like what I am reading dont read it. We all know what we are getting when we read what you write but sometimes Rich, I swear I just have to wonder if we will be reading about you in the newspapers that you are holding the twin cities hostage for some reason!
Exactly, I'm entitled to my opinion just like you are entitled to yours.
Later dude.

<< <i>Rich, advocating distrust anyone outside your immediate family and living in seclusion could be construed by some as "over the top." If that's how you've arranged your life, fine, it works for you. >>
If anyone else wants to contribute PM me or post here and I'll forward the info.
just kidding
Since you're 100% sure that this lady isn't trying to scam you, I'll move on to my second reason as to why I would not help this lady out if I was you........She tried to lowball you. Some people believe in ignoring people who try to lowball them (I'm not good at that), however I would think most people would not give cards away to a person who tried to initially lowball them. Once again, I'm not saying what you did was wrong.....All I'm saying is that I would have handled things differently if I was you.

<< <i>SO if the "kid" was 6 or 7 when Clark played that would make him how old now? >>
Anywhere from 13 to 27, given that Clark played from 1986 to 2000.

Im a bigtime Clark collector. Have been since I was a wee lad and saw him hit a home run off of Nolan Ryan on TV. One of the first games I remember watching.
About 35,000 Clark's later, I am still a fan.

Totally Paranoid Personality Disorder.
I'm not sure about you, but I'm not going to give cards away to someone who attempted to lowball me. How is this being paranoid?
Rich
<< <i>hi.. could you define lowballing you.. that might help me understand this.. do you mean she made you an offer? >>

I am not looking to argue with anyone on this. Do what you want. I really doubt our opinions will sway anyone to change. Why do we bother. Look, now I'm crying.
PM Me I have some Will Clarks I will send.

<< <i>My wife works in the criminal justice profession. She has what she believes to be a "healthy" level of distrust of people. I, on the other hand, believe that 9X% of people are good and honest people. She will often tell me that I am living in my own naive little world. I agree with her, saying that it is a much better world to live in than her cynical world.

Agreed. Life becomes exponentially more bearable once you quit fretting over the possibility of getting scammed.
I've got some Jose Oquendo cards I'd be more than happy to toss in.

i truly feel sorry for you. i don't detest you nor am i angry with you, no i pity a person who lives in a country that is so abundant with opportunities that you still don't have the ability to share.
you could live in a place where their is civil war, rampant disease or famine. or you could reside in north korea or cuba with a total dictatorship. how about an average guy in iraq who cannot go to a market without being afraid of getting it from a car bomb or homicide bomber.
every time we buy something on ebay we take a small chance that the guy on the other end is a thief.
allow me to share a story. i started a conversation with a guy on ebay who lived 1500 miles from me. we were both chasing the same set.
then last december mastronet has their auction and i was too cheap to spring for the $75 to join so i had him bid on a card for me. it was over $500 and i won. i sent him the money. suddenly a month later he was gone from ebay. he sent me a note that he was having financial problems with his business, two months later i got a note that his wife had breast cancer. (still no card sent to me).
i guess i am a big chump because i always believed he would send me the card. the one day in june i got a package with the card. i had no communication with him and he did the right thing after his life got in order.
life is too short to be paranoid of my fellow man. are their scammers-of course and no one wants to be taken advantage of. if anyone feels that the situation is a scam by all means avoid. that certainly doesn't mean everything is a scam.
have you never "benefited from the kindness of strangers?" or if you have does it mean that they were saps and you are one up on them?
one day we are all are going to meet our Savior and He will ask us what we did for the least of our brothers. i hope i can give Him a good answer.

As you said, one day we will meet are maker.
Stone:
Since I'm not related to you, I don't expect you to trust me. As far as my job, people are going to have to trust me or someone else in my profession because they can't do it by themself (just like I trust my doctor in a professional manner, but I would not trust him in other especially personal issues).

I think you're missing out...
I don't think you have any idea how this is being perceived.
I serviced most of my adult life in the military - and trust was a key ingredient in survival.
mike
I would say this definition "hits the nail right on the head."
The point of the story was
1)I can't believe someone would accept a ride (unless it was an emergency, and it didn't appear that in this instance that it was) from a total stranger.
2)I'm not about to go out of my way and open up the store unless the lady was willing to pay extra for after hour service. I've learned that 9 times out 10 that if you give a stranger an inch, they will attempt to get a mile. On the other hand, if this person was an established customer/patient I might have considered it.
Rich
I would like to consider myself a very careful person. However, yes....sometimes I am paranoid. As far as how many friends I have.....I have a few outside my employees, but as my old man taught me growing up in Chicago......"It's ok to have a few friends, but never allow yourself to get to close to them as you never know when they will turn on you".
