"Permitted on eBay.com: Sellers may offer to accept PayPal, credit cards including Mastercard/Visa /Amex/Discover, debit cards and bank electronic payments online for eBay purchases. Sellers may also offer to accept bank-to-bank transfers, often known as bank wire transfers or bank cash transfers. Sellers may accept COD (cash on delivery) or cash for in person transactions. Sellers may offer to accept payment through Certapay and Propay. Sellers may offer to accept personal checks, money orders, cashier’s checks, certified checks and other negotiable instruments."
PayPal and "credit cards including Mastercard/Visa /Amex/Discover" are two COMPLETELY DIFFERENT things.
Checking the boxes under the "Merchant Credit Card" area of the sell your item form is NOT allowed UNLESS you have a merchant account set up to select 1/any/all of THOSE credit cards DIRECTLY with a Mastercard/Visa processor or Amex/Discover DIRECTLY.
Accepting PayPal DOES NOT permit you to select THOSE boxes.
I wonder how many buyers over the years thought they could put it on AMEX/Discover only to be told, "sorry, if you wanna use those you'll have to go thru PayPal (or mail us a check of course where ther's NO fees to us)".
From ALL their listings:
At top:
Payment methods: PayPal,
Personal check,
Money order/Cashiers check,
Other - See Payment Instructions for payment methods accepted,
Visa/MasterCard,
American Express,
Discover
At bottom:
Payment methods accepted
Personal check
Money order/Cashiers check
Other - See Payment Instructions for payment methods accepted
Visa/MasterCard, American Express, Discover
Of course, they reap the benefit (whatever that might be) of attracting buyers that DO look at what forms of payment sellers accept.
Edited to add:
So much for gettting "Membership Rewards" or "Cash Back" for those WITHOUT a PayPal account!

Agreed. Who has Discover anymore anyway??
Just being dramatic.
Of course we ALL know there is NO requirement that an "unsolicited e-mail" is part of the equation for "spamming" to exist - don't we?
Actually I should have put the word "Spammer" in quotes insted of "Payment Method".
Not really any different than saying PCGS in a title when you can't / won't get a PCGS coin & saying you'll accept Amex/Discover when you can't pay with it & they won't accept it - is there?
I think in this (i.e. eBay) context, spamming is basically representing something to be something it is not for the purposes of having your item "more attractive" to a "wider" audience than it would have been in the absence of said spam.
At least with keyword spammers (NOT defending THAT practice AT ALL either), the odds are that you'd find out BEFORE you bought an item.
Not sure I see the difference? I just log into thier site choose paypal and use AMEX. Done, no difference to me.
"Merchant credit cards
Only for sellers accepting credit card purchases through their own merchant account."
No real difference to MANY but not all AND it violates eBay policy/rules AND they are so arrogant they refuse to fix it.
Why do YOU think that is?
See THIS on seller non-performance:
When a seller lists an item on eBay, and a buyer bids for and wins that item, the seller and buyer have entered into a contract. Both members are expected to honor that contract. In accordance with that contract, the seller may not:
1. Fail to deliver an item for which payment was accepted.
2. Significantly misrepresent an item by not meeting the terms and item description outlined in the listing.
3. Refuse to accept payment for an item at the end of a successful sale.
Seller continually represents that they will accept Amex & Discover in their listings but in fact they have NO merchant account with which to do so and refuse to accept payment that way when someone informs them that they want to pay via one of those 2 methods.
Seller has refused on several occasions to correct their listings (and to refrain from publishing new listings) offering to accept Amex/Discover.
Seller continually checks the boxes reserved for those with established merchant accounts with Amex/Discover & gets a "free ride" by taking unfair competitive advantage of those that do (& have spent considerable time & money to cultivate those relationships) as well as disappoint buyers that do not find out they don't until the auction is over.
What? The rules don't apply to Heritage?

Probably the same folks who have Diner's Club still.

I do! For the last three months they gave 5% cash back rebates on gas, and for the next three months they are giving 5% cash back on purchases at the Gap, Kohl's, Marshalls, T.J.Maxx, Famous Footwear, Dell, Office Depot, OfficeMax, Staples, Linens 'n Things and Pier 1 Imports. That works for me.
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
