Confiscate gold and silver? You're thinking too small. No need to worry about it. Bush, Cheney & Co. are into confiscating entire countries.

<< <i>The government never asked for all to turn in silver. >>

Actually there WAS either legislation or a Presidential order around that same time period that called for the turning in of all the silver as well, but they never bothered to enforce it or put it into effect. There was some silver turned in under its provisions but not a large amount.

<< <i><< There is no amendment that protects our gold or silver. >>

True, but the original wording certainly made money not backed by gold/silver unconstitutional. That one obviously got left at the roadside awhile back. >>

Go back and read it again. The Constitution gives the Federal government the power to create money and regulate its value but there is nothing in the constitutuon that requires the federal government money to be backed by gold or silver. It does forbid the STATES from making (declaring) anything but gold or silver a legal tender, but not the FEDERAL government.

Lots of people seem to have the idea that since the 1933 presidential orders exempted coins from before 1933 that they are forever protected. All that any new legislation would have to do it to change that date, say change it to 1793, or not state any date and just say "All gold and/or silver coins must be surrendered" That would remove any protection from any coin. All means ALL!.

i would like for people to make guesses why the govt would
want that useless relic we call gold.

maybe foreign govts will demand payment in gold. this will cause
the USA to go through its gold stocks in a matter of ?years?.
a crisis could pop up that does not allow the economy to get
back on track, so they will demand all our gold because our
senators are a bunch of crooks and want the easy way out
for a problem their senator fathers created.

we are in debt. that is why the govt may take our gold.

does anyone else have other reasons why it may happen?

The Federal Govt could not print paper money based on the original constitution. To do so today is still contrary to the constitution. Money HAD to be coined and made of gold and silver of a certain fineness. Those requirements are in the constitution. Absolutely there was no means intended for the FED govt to print paper money of any sort. The FF's never intended to give the govt the ability to print paper money or even issue bills of credit (continentals in 1770's, greenbacks in the 1860's, etc). Those powers were usurped similar to what the FED did in 1913 to create FRN's (bills of credit).

Gold and silver coins per the constitution are still the only legal form of payment for debts.

There have been national debts before and there will be again. Bush Can't spend money. That is up to congress. There is plenty of blame to go around. I just get sick of hearing The President getting blamed for everything. I don't want this to further digress into name calling so I'll let it go.

What about the Presidents right to Veto...he may not be the one to spend it without Congress approval but he sure has a lot of influence.

No Bush is not responsible for Sept. 11th...Like I said what has happened to the United States has taken almost 30 years of neglect in the FBI, CIA and many departments that should have been on this whole deal before it went down.
But he is the President and he will take the heat but when the history books are written I hope it will all be exposed because there are people who know the truth...but afraid to tell it at this time.

Read an interesting article by Chris Laird on financialsense.com
that estimated the total world assets: "paper" and "electronic $$" liquidity as well as debt, real estate, derivatives, etc. was
something like $2,000 TRILLION dollars.....$2 QUADRILLION. Or maybe it was 2X that.

Either way, the ability to hiccup the system and cascade liquidity issues from one bearer to the next is unparalled today.

Last I calculated the total amount of gold ever mined and assumed to all still be here today, is worth a few TRILLION dollars, a dollar amount that is traded almost DAILY on the currency markets.
The US has about $150 BILLION worth of gold (8K tons) on the "books." We borrow that amount in paper assets less than every 3 months. About 2% of the circulating US currency (FRN's) is "covered" informally by US gold.

What ought to be done instead is for the US government to call for all non-precious metal coins and non-precious metal-backed paper currency to be turned in, in exchange for dollars backed by a certain amount of gold per dollar. Goodbye and good riddance to "clad" coins and inconvertable-paper currency.

The word "coin" in the Constitution trips up a lot of people. While "coin" can refer to a piece of metal intended to circulate and facilitate trade, it is also a verb that means "To create". The use in the Constitution "the power to coin money and regulate the value thereof" can be read as the power to create money and regulate its value. It does not say that that money must be gold and/or silver. Turning paper and ink into legal tender currency is also "coining money". (The only place where gold and silver is mentioned is where the STATES are forbidden to make anything but gold and silver a legal tender, and that is in a completely different section.) And it would be rather difficult to regulate the value of gold and silver coins since their value is dependant upon the world markets. Paper money on the other hand can have its value regulated more easily by the issuing government through the adjustments in the amount in circulation. While I am sure the founding fathers hoped the use of paper money would not be needed, they did not hamstring the federal government by forbidding its issuance.

And nowhere in the Constitution does it make any mention of a certain fineness of the gold or silver for the coinage. Those requirements are in various pieces of legislation and the Mint Act of April 1792, not the Constitution.

The Roadrunner assumption is that Congress could only coin gold or silver. In fact they can coin anything they wish including round plastic coins giving title of ownership. Only the States were required to coin with just gold and silver. The notion that the Federal Government only has a few billion in gold backing coins is true-- but misleading. The assets are more like, 100 Trillion----For example the liquid fungible value of offshore oil and gas (unleased) to the world market. Hmm 3 trillion barrels oil equivalent X $60 dollars a barrel = ?. How about undeveloped land outside of National Parks? How much is is a few thousand acres next to Jellystone worth to the random Arab prince? Our Federal Government has plenty of liquid and desireable assets to back any demand for payment---

If they were thinking of taking the Gold, why would they be selling the Gold? 300,000 oz of Buffalo = 18,750 lbs = 9 tons !! Plus all the unc. + the Eagles.

So if there was a problem, first they'd stop selling the gold.

Actually, it seems like they are selling more Gold. Not only the Buffalos, but the First ladies, the San Fran. Comm. among others.

If anything, one may need to ask, why are they selling all the gold ????? image

  • Options
No they sell the gold at a profit...then they take it back at some point...which could be your loss.

Also think of like this...what better way is there to store gold and not have it all in one place...seems like all gold sales no matter how small are getting reported...I sold under $500 and the guy recorded it...

When you weigh gold and silver...12 oz equal a Troy lb...not 16...so it is 12.5 tons of gold to create 300,000 buffalo's.

I guess that would be Troy Tons.

When you buy a roll of Silver Eagles there are 20 in a roll...so in reality you are buying 1.66666666666666 lbs of silver.

dlimb2--Very well and reasoned arguement about unity. Both parties unfortunately spent a lot of time finding emotional "hot button" issues that separate voters--instead of addressing the really tough problems. There were major differences after Nixon and through Bush 1, but considerable unity overall solving problems. Unfortunately both Clinton and Bush 2 have distroyed any semblance of reasoned debate of substantive issues---For example I don't know a single flaming Liberal who thinks 13 million people should be able to just walk into the USA. Or a Conservative who truly believes that nearly doubling the national debt was a good thing in these last 6 years. But you'd never know it from all the screaming.

It's improbable that the government would ever confiscate gold again since
it is no longer monetized and it's difficult to imagine a scenario which would
lead to the need to anger millions of voters.

It's easier to imagine silver being confiscatred though this is a long shot. If
the market rallies sufficiently to break those selling paper metal then many
buyers are going to be left holding the bag. Worse is the damage that would
be caused by a default of this magnitude. Suddenly there would be a surge
in demand caused by longs who suddenly find they have no silver and margin-
al shorts trying to stay afloat. Users would likely join the stampede. Supply
would instantly be almost non-existent. This could cause massive disruptions
in the commodity and even in the currency markets. The government would
have to step in and do something.

It's more likely they'd announce the confiscation of silver than actually do it
since the silver market would calm as soon as there was a trading halt and
    government took over.

This could happen in gold as well but gold is a far more known and fixed quantity.
There are huge hordes of gold and most of these are already in government
hands. Gold would almost have to be remonetized befor anyone would have any
interest in calling it in. The only way gold would be remonetized is in the event of
a currency crisis. There would be much bigger problems than gold in a currency
    crisis.
