<< <i>An old lady that goes to church with my mother just paid somebody from the local coin shop $900 to come and take a look at her late husband's coin collection. She let the guy sleep in her house two nights while he provided this service. I feel like I need to talk to her and tell her to get a second opinion (MINE) before she sells anthing, if its not already too late. I'd look at them for free (In fact, I'd almost pay to see them) and would like to make an offer without knowing what the other guy said. How should I approach this woman? >>
That your mother's a member of her church and you'll treat her in a Christian way.
I manage money. I earn money. I save money . I give away money. I collect money. I don’t love money . I do love the Lord God.
After being a coin dealer for 25 years as a full time living (2nd generation) I can attest that depending on how big the collections and how fast you are and how much detail the customer wants that some appraisals can run even higher in price. This thread does not explain the dealers qualifications but given that it is a reputable full time dealer with some time under there belt I would gladly pay $900 to them as opposed to a freebie by someone that has never made a living doing it especialy if it's important.
I charge $150. per hour for a detailed report on every coin that included an accurate grade and any needed descriptions that will hold up legally in any court for estate or insurance purposes, If they want a current wholesale appraisal you can guarantee it will be within a few percent of the realized wholesale value. Many pro coin dealers that have been in the business for a number of years can provide the same service, not all do but many are way more honest than this thread alludes to.
Fact is, all my years of doing this and growing up in the business the worst appraisals and rip offs I have heard from came from so called collectors, real collectors(not all) ,experts friends or friends/ family and fly by night dealers, I have yet to see any horrendous appraisals by any dealers with a reputation to uphold.
If I had to have an accurate appraisal on anything I owned I would go to a professional that does it for a living, not a part timer or an expert that does it on the side (not to knock there knowledge as some are great!), I would expect to pay a fair price for the persons time and expertise and have no problem paying a person for 20 years of full time experience, but that’s my money...

I think if anything, the potential for someone to take advantage of a collector's surviving kin should make many collectors take a few moments and come up with a plan for their survivors to liquidate their collection if needed and go over it with them. Not many folks like to think about the inevitable and that the collection that they have spent so many years putting together might be sold but the posibility is always there and just 10 minutes of time can help ease the pain and maximize the value for the survivors...
When it comes to your coin collection and other personal property. Two simple solutions in a nutshell, #1 Setting accounts up in Joint survivorship #2 Having your good items professionaly appraised by an independent dealer with grades listed or have coins graded by reputable grading service then Have detailed notes for the survivor (or there helper) on who, where and what to expect when sold. Im sure alot more of you folks could elaborate even more on this. Much Regards Brian Kuszmar

Perhaps The guy worked during the day, and appraised her coins in the evening. She was probably lonely and welcomed him to stay. I have had freinds bring me "silver dollars" that were Ikes or susan Bs. The guy may turn out to be a slimeball, but wait and see the facts first.
If I was half as smart as I am dumb Iwould be a genious
My local B&M shop gives free appraisals. $900 plus room and board for two days work seems a bit much. Even my boss doesn't charge THAT much for consulting fees.
