MS70 - Nasty Stuff!

I just cleaned some coins with MS70 and got some on my fingers - yiikes! That stuff is nasty, wrinkled the skin and made them kind of tingle, like a chemical burn. So follow the directions and wear gloves!

I've had similar experiences. Before I knew any better, I dipped some SLQs in acetone with a plastic cup. I'm sure you can figure the results. I ended up doing some search and rescue down my bathroom drain when the bottom of the cup dissolved. I've also shot gutter epoxy on my forehead, but that's another story for another time. image

I've only used acetone for PVC removal. A quick dip does the job. For more PVC, you have to dip for longer. Of course, always use acetone away from any open flames and in a well ventilated area. You can search the forum for "pvc removal" and find a wealth of information.

Its an organic solvent. It will dissolve all organic material. Given enough time your hand will dissolve.

Gloves reduce tactile response. I don't want to risk dropping a coin.

I bought from Lowes. Most hardware stores have it.

if it does this to your fingers i can imagine what it does to a coin that is dipped in this stuff

    then

submitted to a grading service for highest possible grade and cameo then holdered with the chemical residue eating in on itself sitting on the coin

i would not want to own any of these dipped beauties long termimage

I'd never trust myself to dip anything of superior quality. The only coin in my collection that I've dipped is a 1795 half. The PVC is gone, and the coin is still the nice shade of circulated gray that it was before the dip.

Based on the nature of MS70, it should ONLY effect biological matter. The silver in the coin should not be affected.

MS70 states on the label that it is not a "dip" but a cleaner.

    MS70 is an anionic surfactant.

You can save a bundle and use Mr. Clean, it's virtually the same stuff as MS70.

Yes, I would rather have dishpan hands than ruin a $400 coin.
