Where to get ezest?

BochimanBochiman Posts: 25,789 ✭✭✭✭✭
So, acetone didn't work (that's good....means it wasn't PVC image ) for the coin, but that is some FUGLY "toning" on the WLH. I won't give it to my mom like that. The other coins in the set are nicer and this, being the largest of her birth year, would stand out. So, I think I need eZest.

Given that I don't have time for mail order before she leaves this week, and given that the nearest coin shop is almost an hour away (or more depending on traffic), are there "normal" shops that would carry it?
Target? Fred Meyer's? Etc?

Then, for using it, suggestions to someone who has never dipped a coin before? The coin is AU58 (according to the place I bought it....I think it is more AU 55ish or maybe even AU50ish)

  • You can buy it mail order from APMEX and variety of other coin mail order stores.

    APMEX

Since you don't have time to get it, one board member shared his dipping secret. Get lemony Ammonia and soak the coin (not copper) in it for a couple of hours. Then rinse with distilled water and dip in rubbing alcohol and let it air dry.

Thanks, but I really don't have time for mail order.....will drive the hour+ on Saturday to a coin shop if I have to wait that long....I just wasn't sure if any other type of store would carry it.

Most liquid cleaners for sterling silver sold in grocery and drug stores should work.

    Dude!

You've done nothing but SPAM the forums and try to sell since your first post.
You're spelling is atrocious as well.

I've never gone to your site, WILL never go to your site, and to quote thiggy, I hope you "die in a fire" for your spam.

Take time to learn the social norms on forums you join rather than try to push people to buy from you

If I posted a coin, of mine, in this post, then it is NOT currently for sale unless this was posted on the BST forum. Thank you.Text

I would normally suggest Ebay but seeing as you dont have time for that...

Would a jewelry store have that kind of thing?

    That's what I am thinking/wondering Ben.
I will try a few, if I get the chance, tomorrow. Otherwise, Weds or Thurs.

It's a busy week with customers in from Korea and Houston both on the same day and a lot of paperwork due before end of month (our end of fiscal year).

You could have someone overnight you some too. It might be cheaper than driving 2 hours when you figure in gas, other usage, and how valuable your time is.

I'd offer to send you mine, but I'm still waiting for it to come.

Bochiman - send the coin to me. that way you save on the ezest. I would personally try MS70 first, its an organic solvent that works on most things. Ezest is an acid and will damage the coin, albeit very little but it does.
  • As far as the actual dipping goes, take it easy. One very quick dip will probably be enough to achieve the desired result. Make sure you have a bowl of distilled water on stand by for rinsing. Don't use tap water as it can result in ugly spots.

I bought a Maria Theresia Thaler from the local silver guy about a year ago. It had been in his shop for decades steeping in cigarette smoke. Nasty gunk brown and yellow. I gave it a "one-mississippi" dip followed by a liberal rinse and that sucker is now blast white and fully lusterous. I defy anyone to detect that dip job.

I should also point out that this is the only successful dipping story I have to share. The others are not so nice.

Assuming your mother wasn't born in 1921 (don't dip it!), you can by liquid Tarnex and Jewel Luster at virtually every CVS or Walgreen Drugstore. I've never seen a grocery without one or the other either. Wash it under a running tap for 20 minute straight before alcohol or it will eventually get brown toning around edges and devices, because it's AU.

After your dip, rinse well with water. Tap water will do. Then go back to the acetone rinse to remove any water. NO need to soak in acetone, just a good rinse.

    Thanks Guys.

Brian, thanks for the offer....I'm at work right now so I couldn't get it in the mail until tomorrow and, even though only a state away, it would put too much stress on both of us to get it done and back.

I'll give a look at the suggestions and see what I can do though.
