My Chciago Report... Peace $ VAMS

I got to the show Friday morning at 10:00am on the nose... no line becasue they had already let everyone in... It's always a great show every year I've gone and this was no exception. Just as crowded, maybe just a little less at the open than last year. I like it that way, more room for me at the tablesimage. I only had one coin to sell and sold it to the very first table I went to as they offered what I wanted to get out of the coin, sure I could have shopped for $ 5.00 more but I wanted to dump it. I was there from 10am until 4:30... what else, looking at every Peace $ that was there... and yes, I looked at EVERY Peace dollar. From slabbed, to flips to junk boxes... I looked at every one. I asked every dealer if they had any put away as well, about 20 of them brought out more coins for me to view.... This year there seemed to be a lot more interest in Peace $ as dealers made comments like "O, another Peace $ guy" Some comments were, "I just sold about 3k to a guy, lets see what I have left." I didn't believe him until I actually saw a guy buy 2k in RAW Peace $ right next to me. I only ran into one dealer that told me to go take a hike because I wanted to look at every coin... That's fine... sometimes I told dealers what I was doing, sometimes I didn't... At one table I had a dealer ask me if I was looking for VAMS. I said Yes, he tells me "O, I've looked at them all, there are none, I have the book" I pull a VAM out of my pocket and hand it to him "Then you'll appreciate this I said...." at which he hands it back and tells me he doesn't know what it is.... more on that coin later..

At this show I found the same number of coins I did last year, just 3. I was very happy with the results. One of the coins I found was a 1934-S VAM 3 in PCGS MS-64. I took me a long time to finally pull out that much $ to purchase it but I managed to do it. She's already on her way to PCGS for attribution so no pics of her. However, she IS a top pop as of right now. Now, on to the other 2 coins I found....

This coin, I kid you not, was at the very last table I went to AND the very last coin I looked at... I had to laugh when I looked at it because from about noon on, I hadn't found anything.... She has violets, blues and some other tones on her... a top pop 1924 1G Broken wing in PCGS MS-65... the 2nd coins I'll post pics of in a few minutes....

Holy crap! A 34-S VAM-3 in P64?! I have been buying MS of that date using internet images and hopeful, but realistic, guesswork for some time with no luck. Never found one on a bourse in any grade. You suck quite a bit, buddy. LOL. That alone made the day well worth it. Bet your loupe eye is all blurry now.

Yes, my eyes were killing me after that day... Sorry for the huge images, I'll have to make an adjustment to the camera... anyways... About an hour into the show I sit at this dealer's table and look through his Peace $... he's got a 2ft long box with flips, both sides full ... common dates too.. a Vammer's heaven... as I go through them I happen upon a chin bar that is marked "chin bar" $40. (all of these coins were au/ms) so I'm thinking that I shouldn't even bother looking at the rest of his coins because he knows what VAMs are.... then I glanced at this coin's obverse... flipped it over and noticed the ray behind the eagle's foot filed down half way... a sign of a 8a... so I flip it back over... get the loupe out and nope... nothing there.... until I go about .3456 milimeters to the left... image

    A crazy ULDS 1H in MS-64...

How much cooler could that be? It is definitely easier to spot than the 8A breaks. Same reverse as VAM-8 huh? Interesting. Now we need to figure out whether this or what is called 8A is the descendant of the VAM-8 obverse. Cannot be both.

It's a 1H, but most 1H's are just a tiny chip.... I like to think this one is a 1924 Earring.... image

My guess is that you'll never see another 1H like this one.... the break is generally just the biggest blob there... from the top of the blob to the first time it ends moving towards the date... Again, this is a SDULDS coin (Super Duper Ultra Late Die State coin...lol)

Nice haul, and that 24 1H SUCKS! I was there Friday from 10 to 1. I pretty much left the Peace dollars alone, but would have had no business going after a 34-S in 64, anyway. I did come home with two AU 1878 VAM 198, a nice looking VAM 83 (not much of a cherrypick, but I liked it), a 78-S VAM 6, 78-S VAM 22 in Low Grade, 87-S VAM 4 (strong repunched date) AU, 89-O VAM 2A, and an underpriced AU 96-O. I left an 1878 VAM 8 somewhere. It was unattributed, but overpriced. Then it was time to go. I wonder if I ran into you anywhere.image

There's that guy and the one with the rolling backpack loaded with reference books. The latter is my own metamorphosis from the former.
