Will you buy Morgan Dollar Liberty struck in 2006 ?

To honor the San Francisco Mint. CoinWorld, July 3rd, indicated the US Mint will strike both a Silver Dollar with the Morgan dollar Liberty as the obverse and a $5 Dollar gold coin to commemorate the San Francisco Mint. $5 Gold obverse will be a Coronet Liberty based on 1906 Coronet Double Eagle. Reverse for both coins will be views of San Francisco Mint. Sign me up !

    Bad practice, IMO.

I saw the antique toy market dissolve when repros and "close" models became available to the decorators who used to use genuine antiques.

Many of you will say it won't make a difference as there are too many dedicated collectors desiring GENUINE OLD coins for designs. Maybe you're right, but if only a few decide the new issues will satisfy their desire for the design, it will remove that section of the market. Then, as acceptance grows, more will do the same.

    IMO.

I beleive I would also, I just love the design and I have bought 1lb. bullion in the shape of the morgan so i dont see why i wouldnt buy a coin that was actually struck by one of the US mints no matter what date it was

With only 100,000 gold $5.00 coins minted and 500,000 silver dollars minted, wouldn't that be a low mintage for so called "Modern Crap" I would buy them to commemorate the Old Granite Lady any day, the only financial facility to survive the 1906 earthquake. The surcharge will be going to the San Francisco Museum and Historical Society anyway, so think of it as a donation. Sign me upimage

Just another indication that the decision makers are artistically bankrupt.
  • Hmm, I might get the silver dollar. I'm curious, though. Are we talking 90% silver or .999 fine?

  • The Buffalo silver dollar has been well accepted, I suspect the Morgan design will also be?

Great...Now everyone will be able to own a MS69 Morgan dollar or Half eagle.

I like the Buffallo dollar and bullion coin, but the US mint had better be careful issuing reproductions of coins in the same denominations weight and fineness as the originals. It will be a scamers paradise.image

I, on the other hand, probably won't buy anything with the Morgan design on it...at least the Morgan Liberty. The eagle reverse is okay.

Of course, in reality, I wouldn't be buying one regardless of the design. I simply am not a fan of bullion rounds.

They will be legal tender coins. Heck, you can even go spend them for face value.image

Legal tender status has nothing to do with it. They are silver rounds...nothing more, nothing less. They merely happen to be minted/marketed by the U.S. Mint rather than Silvertowne or the Franklin Mint. (both of which ALSO put out a "spendable" product even if not legal tender)

If it look nice, then yes; if it looks like crap, no way.
Great transaction with: Relaxn, Collectorcoins, OKCC
  • They do look nice ! Photos will be in July 3rd CoinWorld. Cannot link--possible copyright infringement.
